How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 500 mg to 2 grams every 8 hours. For children (3 months to 12 years), the dose is typically 10-40 mg per kilogram of body weight every 8 hours; children over 50 kg receive the adult dose.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a large vein by a doctor or nurse. It takes about 5 to 30 minutes. You should usually get your injections at the same time each day.

Important

Your doctor will decide your specific maximum daily dose based on your infection and kidney function.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site
  • Increased platelets in blood tests
  • Changes in blood tests, including liver function tests
RARE
  • Blood changes (e.g., fewer platelets causing easier bruising, changes in white blood cells, increased bilirubin)
  • Changes in blood test results, including kidney function tests
  • Tingling or prickling sensation
  • Fungal infections in mouth or vagina
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea
  • Soreness or pain in the vein where the medicine is injected
  • Decreased potassium in blood, causing weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, or irregular heartbeats
  • Liver problems (yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools)
  • Seizures
  • Sudden confusion or delirium

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or similar antibiotics (like penicillin).
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if your skin or eyes turn yellow, your skin itches, your urine is dark, or your stools are pale. These can be signs of liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Get medical help right away if you develop a severe rash, blisters, or skin peeling.
