How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 500 mg to 2 g every 8 hours, depending on the infection. Children (over 3 months and under 12 years) usually take 10 mg to 40 mg per kg of body weight every 8 hours. Children weighing more than 50 kg get the adult dose.

Method

This medicine is given into a large vein as an injection or infusion. A doctor or nurse will usually give you the medicine.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 6 grams. Your doctor will adjust the dose if your kidneys are not working well.

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and swelling at the injection site
  • Increased platelets (shown in blood tests)
  • Changes in liver function tests
RARE
  • Changes in kidney function tests
  • Tingling or prickling skin
  • Oral or vaginal yeast infections (thrush)
  • Colon inflammation with diarrhea
  • Tenderness in veins where injected
  • Blood changes (like decreased platelets, changes in white blood cells, increased bilirubin)
  • Frequent infections, high fever, sore throat (due to other blood changes)
  • Delirium (confusion)
  • Seizures

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or other similar antibiotics (like penicillins or cephalosporins).
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • If you get severe skin reactions (like a serious rash or blistering), stop the medicine and get medical help right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking probenecid (for gout), valproic acid (for epilepsy), or blood thinners (anticoagulants).
