How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the dose is typically 500 mg – 2 g every 8 hours, and for children (over 3 months, under 12 years) 10–40 mg per kg every 8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion directly into a large vein, usually by a healthcare professional.

Important

The doctor will determine the maximum daily dose based on the infection and kidney function.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site
  • Increase in platelet count (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in liver function blood values
RARE
  • Changes in kidney function blood values
  • Skin tingling or prickling (paresthesia)
  • Fungal infections of the mouth or vagina (thrush)
  • Colon inflammation with diarrhea (colitis)
  • Tenderness in veins at the medicine administration site
  • Decrease in platelet count (may increase bruising)
  • Changes in white blood cell count (increase or decrease)
  • Increase in bilirubin levels in the blood
  • Frequent infections, high fever, and sore throat (due to other blood value changes)
  • Severe rash, itching, or hives (allergic reactions)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts (allergic reactions)
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing (allergic reactions)
  • Fever, rash, changes in liver blood values, increased white blood cells, and swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome)
  • Fever, large areas of swollen and red skin, small fluid-filled blisters (acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis)
  • Severe, red, peeling rash, pus-filled skin bumps or blisters, high fever, and joint pain
  • Circular patches, blisters, peeling skin, sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Unusual shortness of breath (red blood cell damage)
  • Red or brown urine (red blood cell damage)
  • Delirium (state of confusion)
  • Seizures (convulsions)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to other antibiotics like penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems or severe diarrhea.
  • If you develop a severe skin reaction, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Meropenem should not be used with valproic acid (epilepsy medicine) as it may reduce its effectiveness.
