How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 500 mg to 2 g, given every 8 hours. For children aged 3 months to 12 years, the dose is typically 10-40 mg per kg of body weight, given every 8 hours, with children over 50 kg receiving adult doses.

Method

Meropenem B. Braun is usually given by a doctor or nurse as a drip (intravenous infusion) directly into a vein, taking 15 to 30 minutes. Your doctor will tell you how it should be given, and you should normally receive your injections at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 6 g (2 g every 8 hours), and for children, it is up to 120 mg/kg (40 mg/kg every 8 hours).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation at the injection site
  • Increased number of platelets in the blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood test results, including liver function tests
RARE
  • Changes in blood, such as decreased platelets (leading to easier bruising), increased or decreased certain white blood cells, and increased bilirubin. Your doctor may order blood tests.
  • Changes in blood test results, including kidney function tests.
  • Tingling or prickling sensation (like pins and needles)
  • Fungal infections (candidiasis) in the mouth or vagina
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea
  • Tenderness/soreness of the veins at the meropenem injection site
  • Other blood changes, with symptoms like repeated infections, high fever, and sore throat. Your doctor may order blood tests.
  • Decreased potassium levels in the blood (which can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, and heart rhythm problems).
  • Liver problems (yellowing skin/eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stools). Seek immediate medical attention if you notice these.
  • Convulsions (seizures)
  • Acute confusion (delirium)
  • Severe rash, hives, or itchy skin
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Severe allergic reactions with fever, rash, changes in liver function blood tests (increased liver enzymes), increased certain white blood cells (eosinophils), and enlarged lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome).
  • Severe, red, peeling rash, pus-filled blisters, or skin peeling, possibly with high fever and joint pain.
  • Severe rashes that appear as round patches with blisters in the center, skin peeling, sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes, possibly preceded by fever and flu-like symptoms (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) or a more severe form (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Red blood cell damage with symptoms like unexpected shortness of breath, red or brown urine.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Meropenem B. Braun if you are allergic to meropenem or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Meropenem B. Braun if you are allergic to other antibiotics like penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems, as you might also be allergic to meropenem.
  • Tell your doctor if you have health problems like liver or kidney diseases.
  • Inform your doctor immediately if you notice yellowing of your skin or eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, or pale stools, as these could be signs of liver problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you have had severe diarrhea caused by antibiotics.

  • Severe skin reactions can occur. If you notice signs, seek immediate medical help from a doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.
  • Meropenem can cause headaches, tingling or prickling skin sensations, involuntary muscle movements, or convulsions (seizures) which can affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience these side effects.
