How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose for adults is 500 mg to 2 grams every 8 hours. For children (3 months to 12 years, under 50 kg), it's 10-40 mg per kg every 8 hours, with children over 50 kg receiving adult doses.

Method

This medicine is usually given by a doctor or nurse as a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) over 15-30 minutes, or as a quick injection over 5 minutes. You should receive your doses at the same time each day.

Important

Adults: Up to 6 grams per day (2 grams every 8 hours). Children (under 50 kg): Up to 120 mg per kg per day (40 mg per kg every 8 hours).

RARE
  • Changes in blood (e.g., fewer platelets causing easier bruising, changes in white blood cells, increased bilirubin)
  • Changes in blood test results, including kidney function tests
  • Tingling or prickling sensation (like pins and needles)
  • Fungal infections (e.g., in the mouth or vagina)
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea
  • Tenderness or soreness of blood vessels at the injection site
  • Decreased blood potassium levels (can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, and irregular heartbeat)
  • Seizures
  • Sudden disorientation and confusion (delirium)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or other similar antibiotics (like penicillins or cephalosporins).
  • Inform your doctor about any existing liver or kidney problems.
  • Seek medical help immediately if you notice yellow skin/eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, or pale stools, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking probenecid (for gout), valproic acid or similar medicines (for epilepsy), or blood thinners. Meropenem should not be used with valproic acid as it can reduce its effect.

  • Do not drive or operate machines if you experience side effects such as headaches, tingling, involuntary muscle movements, or seizures, as this medicine can affect your ability to concentrate.
