How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your dose based on your infection. It is usually given every 8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion into a large vein by a doctor or nurse, taking 15 to 30 minutes, and should not be mixed with other medicines.

Your doctor or nurse will determine your maximum daily dose based on your specific infection and kidney function.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach ache, feeling sick (nausea and vomiting), diarrhea.
  • Headache.
  • Rash, itchy skin.
  • Pain and inflammation where the medicine is given.
  • More platelets in blood (seen in blood tests).
  • Changes in liver blood tests.
RARE
  • Changes in blood (fewer platelets, altered white blood cells, more bilirubin), leading to easy bruising, infections, fever, sore throat.
  • Changes in kidney blood tests.
  • Tingling feeling.
  • Fungal infections in mouth or vagina.
  • Gut inflammation with diarrhea.
  • Inflammation of the vein where the medicine is given (thrombophlebitis).
  • Low potassium in blood (can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, and irregular heartbeats).
  • Liver problems (yellow skin or eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stools).
  • Red blood cell damage (hemolytic anemia) causing unexpected shortness of breath, red or brown urine.
  • Seizures.
  • Sudden confusion or disorientation (delirium).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or other similar antibiotics like penicillin.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, or have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions like rashes or blisters.
  • Contact your doctor if you notice yellow skin or eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, or pale stools, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 3 months of age.

  • Avoid use during pregnancy; if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience headache, tingling skin, muscle twitching, or seizures.
  • This medicine contains sodium; discuss with your doctor if you are on a low-salt diet.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially probenecid (for gout), valproic acid (for epilepsy), and blood thinners.
