How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your exact dose. For adults, the dose is usually 500 mg to 2 g, given every 8 hours. For children over 3 months, the dose is 10–40 mg per kg of body weight, given every 8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a large vein by a healthcare professional. In some cases, you may be trained to give it at home. Injections should be given at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is usually 6 g (2 g three times a day).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Increased number of blood platelets (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood tests, including tests that show how well your liver is working
RARE
  • Changes in blood, such as fewer platelets (causing easier bruising), more of some white blood cells, fewer of others, and increased bilirubin (a substance). These changes can also cause frequent infections, fever, and sore throat.
  • Changes in blood tests that show how well your kidneys are working
  • Tingling feeling (pins and needles)
  • Fungal (yeast) infections in the mouth or vagina
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea
  • Soreness of blood vessels at the injection site
  • Sudden severe rash, blisters, or peeling skin, which may be linked to high fever and joint pain
  • Decreased potassium levels in the blood (can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, and irregular heartbeats)
  • Liver problems: yellow skin and eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, or pale stools. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice these.
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Acute disorientation and confusion (delirium)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to meropenem or any other ingredient in this medicine, or to other antibiotics like penicillins.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems or if you have had severe diarrhea after using other antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you develop severe rash, itching, swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, or yellow skin, dark urine, or pale stools.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 3 months of age.
  • Avoid using this medicine if you are taking epilepsy medications like valproic acid, as it can make them less effective.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medications for gout (probenecid) or blood thinners (oral anticoagulants).
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause headaches, tingling, or involuntary muscle movements (convulsions) and may affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or operate machines if you experience these symptoms.
  • Meropenem AptaPharma contains sodium, which is important to consider if you are on a sodium-restricted diet.
