How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 500 mg to 2 grams every 8 hours. For children (3 months to 12 years), the dose is 10-40 mg per kg of body weight, usually every 8 hours. Children over 50 kg can take adult doses.

Method

Merocarb is given as an injection or infusion into a large vein, usually by a doctor or nurse. An injection can take 5 to 30 minutes.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 6 grams, as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itching
  • Pain and swelling at the injection site
  • More platelets in your blood (seen in tests)
  • Changes in blood test results, including liver function tests
RARE
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., fewer platelets causing easier bruising, changes in white blood cells, increased bilirubin).
  • Changes in blood tests, including kidney function tests.
  • Tingling or prickling feeling on the skin (pins and needles).
  • Yeast infection in the mouth or vagina (thrush).
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea.
  • Pain or swelling in the vein where the medicine was injected.
  • Low potassium levels in the blood (can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, or irregular heartbeat).
  • Liver problems, signs include yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, or pale stools. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice these.
  • Seizures.
  • Sudden confusion (delirium).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Merocarb if you are allergic to meropenem or any other ingredients in this medicine, or to other antibiotics like penicillin, cephalosporins, or carbapenems.
  • Tell your doctor before use if you have liver or kidney problems, or if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Do not use Merocarb if you are taking valproic acid (a medicine for epilepsy), as Merocarb can make it less effective.
  • Get urgent medical help immediately if you experience severe skin rash, hives, swelling of your face/lips/tongue, or difficulty breathing/wheezing.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you notice severe red, peeling skin, pus-filled spots, blisters, or skin shedding, especially with high fever or joint pain.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexpected shortness of breath or red/brown urine, as these can be signs of red blood cell damage.
  • Merocarb can cause involuntary muscle movements and seizures. Do not drive or operate machines if you experience these side effects.
