How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the dose is usually 500 mg to 2 g, typically every 8 hours. For children aged 3 months to 12 years, the dose is 10–40 mg per kilogram of body weight, usually every 8 hours. Children over 50 kg may receive an adult dose.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a vein, usually by a doctor or nurse. An injection can take 5 to 30 minutes. You should receive your injections at the same time each day.

Important

For adults, the maximum dose in a day is typically up to 6 grams. For children over 50 kg, it is also up to 6 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Pain and swelling at the injection site
  • Increased blood platelets (seen in blood tests)
  • Changes in blood test results, including liver function
RARE
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., more bruising, changes in white blood cells)
  • Increased bilirubin (a substance in blood)
  • Changes in blood test results, including kidney function
  • Tingling sensation (like pins and needles)
  • Yeast infection in mouth or vagina
  • Bowel inflammation with diarrhea
  • Soreness of blood vessels at the injection site
  • Other blood changes (e.g., frequent infections, high fever, sore throat)
  • Decreased potassium in blood (can cause weakness, muscle cramps, tingling, irregular heartbeat)
  • Liver problems (yellow skin/eyes, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stools) - seek immediate medical care
  • Seizures
  • Sudden confusion

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to meropenem or any other antibiotics like penicillin.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe diarrhea after taking other antibiotics.
  • Seek immediate medical care if your skin or eyes turn yellow, your skin itches, your urine is dark, or your stools are pale, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • This medicine should not be used with valproic acid (for epilepsy) as it can make valproic acid less effective. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including probenecid (for gout) and blood thinners.

  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to be, or breastfeeding. This medicine should generally be avoided during pregnancy. Small amounts can pass into breast milk.
  • This medicine can cause headaches, tingling, involuntary muscle movements, shaking, and even loss of consciousness. Do not drive or operate machines if you experience these effects.
  • If you experience severe rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical help. Also seek immediate medical help if you develop severe red, peeling skin, pus-filled spots, blisters, or skin peeling, especially if accompanied by high fever, joint pain, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes.
  • If you have unexpected shortness of breath or red/brown urine, contact your doctor right away.
