How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start with a low dose and slowly increase it if needed. For adults who haven't taken it before, the usual starting dose is 10 mg per day.

Method

Take the capsules whole with water. For children, take with or after breakfast. For adults, take with or after breakfast and lunch. You can also open the capsule and mix its contents with a spoonful of applesauce or yogurt; take immediately. Do not chew or crush the capsule contents.

Important

The maximum daily dose for children is 60 mg. For adults, the maximum daily dose is 1 mg per kg of body weight, up to a maximum of 80 mg per day.

  • Blood pressure changes (usually high blood pressure)
  • Fast heart rate, cold hands or feet
  • Shaking and tremors, dizziness
  • Uncontrolled movements, inner restlessness
  • Unusual activity
  • Aggression, agitation, restlessness, mood changes, anxiety, depression, stress, irritability, abnormal behavior, sleep problems, fatigue
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, thirst, vomiting (often at the start of treatment, can be reduced by taking with food)
  • Weight loss
  • Excessive sweating
RARE
  • Irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Personality changes
  • Severe teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Mood swings
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Psychotic symptoms (e.g., sensing or hearing things that aren't real)
  • Uncontrolled speech and movements (Tourette's syndrome) or worsening of these
  • Severe chest pain (possibly heart-related)
  • Serious allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing)
  • Unusual excitement or overactivity (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Seizures (fits, epilepsy with convulsions)
  • Peeling skin, purple spots, or red skin rash
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms (affecting eyes, head, neck, body)
  • Movement, vision, or speech problems (may be signs of brain blood flow issues)
  • Decreased blood cells (red, white, platelets), leading to higher risk of infections, bleeding, or bruising
  • Sudden very high fever, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Unwanted, repeating thoughts
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath (may be signs of heart problems)
  • Muscle pain, twitching, or tension
  • Constipation
  • Discomfort in the chest
  • Inflammation of stomach or small intestine lining

  • Feeling a physical need for the medicine or feeling its absence (withdrawal)
  • Brain blood vessel problems (stroke, inflammation, or blockages)
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Prolonged or painful erections, or more erections
  • Fast, jumbled speech
  • ADHD symptoms returning or depression after stopping treatment
  • Tingling
  • Speech or language problems
  • Retching or throwing up
  • Attention disorder
  • Flu-like illness
  • Lack of energy or weakness
  • Thirst
  • Increased thyroid hormone levels in blood
  • Pain in mouth or throat
  • Nosebleed
  • Dry eyes
  • Higher eye pressure
  • Stress with partner or family
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Misuse of medicine
  • Low levels of all blood cells (pancytopenia)
  • Inability to control urination
  • Jaw muscle spasms making it hard to open mouth
  • Stuttering
  • Slowed growth or weight gain in children

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child have liver or kidney problems, seizures, or problems swallowing whole tablets.
  • Inform your doctor if you or your child have misused or been dependent on alcohol, medicines, or drugs.
  • Report to your doctor if you or your child have high blood pressure or heart problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child have mental health issues like mood swings, aggression, or unusual thoughts.

  • In boys and young men, unexpected and prolonged erections can occur. Seek medical help if an erection lasts longer than 2 hours and is painful.
  • Do not drink alcohol with this medicine, as it may worsen side effects.
  • Do not take this medicine on the day of surgery if a certain type of anesthetic is used, as it may cause a sudden rise in blood pressure.
  • Do not use if you are taking or have taken MAO inhibitors (for depression) in the last 14 days, as it can cause a sudden and dangerous rise in blood pressure.
  • This medicine may cause positive results in drug tests and doping tests for athletes.
