How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it until it works best for you. For new adult users, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once a day.

Method

Take the capsule whole with water, with or after food. Children should take it with breakfast, adults with breakfast and lunch. Do not chew or crush the capsule. If you can't swallow it whole, you can open it and mix the contents with a tablespoon of applesauce or yogurt; take it right away. Take it earlier in the day to avoid sleep problems.

Important

The maximum daily dose for children is 60 mg. For adults, it is usually up to 80 mg daily, depending on body weight.

RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't there (psychosis, hallucinations)
  • Uncontrolled speech and movements (tics), or worsening of Tourette's syndrome
  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or trouble breathing)
  • Muscle pain, twitches, or tension
  • Constipation
  • Inflammation of the stomach or small intestine lining
  • Heart murmur (found during a check-up)
  • Blood in urine
  • Double or blurred vision
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, weepiness, feeling too aware of surroundings, tenseness
  • Unusual excitement, hyperactivity, and uncontrolled behavior (mania)
  • Feeling confused
  • Dilated pupils, vision problems
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Redness of skin, raised red rash
  • Chest pain due to not enough blood to the heart
  • Menstrual problems or changes
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Muscle cramps
  • Red spots on the skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of brain arteries
  • Liver problems, including liver failure and coma
  • Changes in blood or liver test results

  • Increased thyroid hormone levels in blood
  • Pain in mouth and throat

  • Dry eyes
  • Higher than normal eye pressure

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Drug abuse
  • Low levels of all blood cells
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasms making it hard to open mouth
  • Stuttering
  • Slowed growth or weight gain in children

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you or your child have an overactive thyroid gland or high eye pressure (glaucoma).
  • Do not take if you or your child have a tumor on the adrenal gland or an eating disorder like anorexia.
  • Do not take if you or your child have very high blood pressure, narrowed blood vessels, or serious heart problems (e.g., heart attack, irregular heartbeat, heart failure, or a heart defect).
  • Do not take if you or your child have had problems with blood vessels in the brain (e.g., stroke, aneurysm, or blocked vessels).

  • Do not take if you or your child are currently taking or have taken MAO inhibitors (for depression) in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take if you or your child have serious mental health issues like psychosis, severe depression, bipolar disorder (mania), or suicidal thoughts.
  • Do not take if you or your child have low stomach acid or take medicines that reduce stomach acid, as this can affect how Medikinet CR works.
  • Boys and young men: If you have a painful erection lasting more than 2 hours, contact a doctor right away.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can worsen side effects.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, sleepiness, or vision problems, making it unsafe to drive or operate machinery.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, seizures, tics (Tourette's syndrome), or other heart or mental health problems not listed above.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as this medicine may affect your baby.
