Medikinet CR is used to treat ADHD by increasing activity in certain parts of the brain, improving attention and concentration, and reducing impulsive behavior.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you or your child how much to take. They will usually start with a low dose and slowly increase it. The usual starting dose for adults is 10 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water. You can also open the capsule and mix its contents with a tablespoon of applesauce or yogurt. Take this mixture right away. Do not chew or crush the capsule or its contents. Children should take the medicine in the morning with or after breakfast. Adults should take it with or after breakfast and lunch. Taking it too late in the day can cause sleep problems.

Important

The highest daily dose for children is 60 mg. For adults, it is usually 1 mg per kg of body weight, but no more than 80 mg per day.

  • Itching, rash, or hives
  • Cough, sore throat, irritated nose/throat, shortness of breath, or chest pain
  • Blood pressure changes (usually high blood pressure)
  • Fast heartbeat (tachycardia), cold hands or feet
  • Shaking and tremors, dizziness
  • Uncontrolled movements, feeling restless inside
  • Unusual activity
  • Aggression, agitation, restlessness, emotional instability, anxiety, depression, stress, irritability, abnormal behavior, sleep problems, fatigue
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, thirst, vomiting (often at the start of treatment, can be reduced by taking medicine with food)
  • Reduced appetite/unwillingness to eat
  • Weight loss
  • Excessive sweating
  • Irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Personality changes
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
RARE
  • Sudden mood changes, including suicidal thoughts or feeling overly excited (mania)
  • Symptoms of psychosis, like seeing or hearing things that aren't there, or believing things that aren't true
  • Uncontrolled speech and body movements (like Tourette's syndrome) or if these get worse
  • Allergic reactions, such as rashes, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, and trouble breathing or wheezing
  • Serious heart problems, like a heart attack, sudden death, or very irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures (convulsions) or muscle cramps
  • Skin problems, such as red spots, peeling skin, or purple-red patches
  • Problems with blood vessels in the brain, like inflammation or blockages, leading to issues with movement or vision, or speech problems
  • Abnormal liver function, including liver failure or coma
  • Changes in test results, including liver function and blood tests
  • Feeling numb, cold, or tingly in fingers and toes, which may change color from white to blue to red when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine
  • Very high fever
  • Gagging
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasms that make it hard to open the mouth (lockjaw)
  • Stuttering
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Long-lasting and sometimes painful erections, or increased number of erections
  • Feeling a physical need for the medicine or feeling its absence
  • ADHD symptoms may return or side effects like depression may occur when stopping the medicine
  • Tingling
  • Problems with speech and talking
  • Attention disorder
  • Flu-like illness
  • Lack of energy/weakness
  • Thirst
  • Increased thyroid hormone levels in blood
  • Pain in mouth and throat area
  • Nosebleed
  • Heart discomfort/pain
  • Dry eye
  • Higher eye pressure than normal
  • Stress with partner/family
  • Hot flashes/flushing
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Medicine abuse
  • Pancytopenia (lack of all types of blood cells)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Medikinet CR if you or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Medikinet CR if you or your child have an overactive thyroid gland, high pressure in the eye (glaucoma), or a tumor on your adrenal gland.
  • Do not take Medikinet CR if you or your child have an eating disorder, very high blood pressure, narrow blood vessels that cause pain in your arms and legs, or serious heart problems like a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, or heart defect.
  • Do not take Medikinet CR if you or your child have had problems with blood vessels in the brain (like a stroke) or are taking antidepressants called MAO inhibitors or have taken them in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take Medikinet CR if you or your child have severe mental health problems, such as psychosis, schizophrenia, severe depression, suicidal thoughts, or mania (feeling unusually happy and overactive).

  • Talk to your doctor before taking Medikinet CR if you or your child have liver or kidney problems, trouble swallowing pills, or have had seizures or an abnormal brain wave test (EEG).
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child have a history of abusing or being dependent on alcohol, medicines, or drugs.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child have uncontrolled body movements or sounds (tics) or Tourette's syndrome, high blood pressure, or other heart problems not mentioned in the 'Do not take' section.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child have other mental health problems, such as mood swings (bipolar disorder), aggression, seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), believing things that aren't true (delusions), feeling unusually suspicious (paranoia), being agitated, anxious, tense, depressed, or guilty.
  • Boys and young men may experience long-lasting and painful erections. Contact a doctor right away if an erection lasts more than 2 hours.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make side effects worse. Some foods and medicines may also contain alcohol.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. Methylphenidate may pass into breast milk.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, sleepiness, or vision problems. If you or your child experience these, do not drive, operate machinery, or do activities that require focus.
  • This medicine can cause positive results in drug tests and doping tests for athletes.
