How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it if needed. Your doctor will tell you your daily capsule dose.

Method

Take the capsules by mouth with water. Children should take them with or after breakfast. Adults should take them with or after breakfast and lunch. You can also open the capsule and mix its contents with a small amount of applesauce or yogurt to be eaten right away. Do not chew or crush the capsules or their contents.

Important

The maximum daily dose for children is 60 mg. For adults, the maximum daily dose is up to 80 mg of methylphenidate per kilogram of body weight.

  • Reduced appetite
  • Headache
  • Feeling nervous
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Feeling sad or losing interest
  • Joint pain
  • Fever
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Unusual sleepiness or drowsiness
  • Panic attacks
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Toothache
  • Itching, skin rash, or hives
  • Cough, sore throat, or trouble breathing
  • Changes in blood pressure (usually high)
  • Fast heartbeat, cold hands or feet
  • Shaking or dizziness
  • Uncontrolled movements or feeling restless inside
  • Unusual high activity
  • Mood changes, aggression, anxiety, stress, or irritability
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, upset stomach, vomiting, or thirst (especially at the start of treatment, taking with food may help)
  • Weight loss
  • Excessive sweating
  • Pounding heartbeat
  • Changes in personality
  • Grinding teeth (bruxism)
RARE
  • Muscle pain, twitching, or tension
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Inflammation of the stomach or small intestine lining
  • Blood in urine
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • High liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Feeling angry, tearful, overly aware of surroundings, or tense
  • Feeling calm or sleepy
  • General sleep problems
  • Fatigue
  • Thoughts of harming yourself
  • Psychosis symptoms, like hearing or seeing things that are not real
  • Uncontrolled speech and movements (Tourette's syndrome) or worsening of these
  • Allergic reactions like rash, itching, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue, or trouble breathing/wheezing
  • Unusual excitement, hyperactivity, or lack of control (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Muscle cramps
  • Red spots on the skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of brain arteries
  • Severe liver problems, including liver failure or coma
  • Changes in test results (e.g., liver function or blood tests)
  • Suicidal attempts, abnormal thoughts, lack of emotions, doing things repeatedly, or being obsessed with one thing
  • Lack of energy or short-term sadness
  • Numbness, tingling, coldness, and color changes in fingers and toes (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat
  • Severe seizures (grand mal)
  • Belief in things that are not real
  • Confusion
  • Sad or dark thoughts
  • Feeling a strong need for the medicine
  • Erection problems (erectile dysfunction)
  • Long-lasting or painful erections
  • Talking too much in an uncontrolled way
  • ADHD symptoms returning or depression after stopping the medicine
  • Problems with speech
  • Gagging
  • Attention problems
  • Flu-like illness
  • Lack of energy or weakness
  • Feeling thirsty
  • Increased thyroid hormone levels in blood
  • Pain in the mouth and throat
  • Nosebleed
  • Heart discomfort
  • Dry eyes
  • Higher eye pressure than normal
  • Stress with partner or family
  • Chest pain
  • Hot flashes
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Drug abuse
  • Low levels of all blood cells
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasms making it hard to open your mouth
  • Stuttering
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath (may be signs of heart problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you or your child has an overactive thyroid gland.
  • Do not take if you or your child has an eye disease called glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • Do not take if you or your child has a tumor on the adrenal gland (pheochromocytoma).
  • Do not take if you or your child has an eating disorder, such as anorexia.

  • Do not take if you or your child has very high blood pressure or narrowed blood vessels that cause pain in the arms or legs.
  • Do not take if you or your child has had heart problems, such as a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, heart failure, or a congenital heart defect.
  • Do not take if you or your child has had problems with blood vessels in the brain, such as a stroke, aneurysm, blocked blood vessels, or vasculitis.
  • Do not take if you or your child is taking or has taken antidepressants called MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take if you or your child has mental health problems such as: personality disorder, unusual thoughts or visions, schizophrenia, or severe mood problems like suicidal thoughts, deep sadness, or extreme happiness/overactivity.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has liver or kidney problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has trouble swallowing whole tablets.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has had seizures (fits, epilepsy) or an abnormal brainwave test (EEG).
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has a history of alcohol or drug abuse or dependence.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has uncontrollable, repeated body twitches or sounds (tics).
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has high blood pressure.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has other heart problems not listed above.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child has other mental health problems not listed above, such as: mood swings (bipolar disorder), aggression, hallucinations, false beliefs (delusions), paranoia, feeling agitated, anxious, tense, depressed, or guilty.
  • This medicine may cause a positive result in drug tests (doping tests for athletes).
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it may worsen side effects.
