How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a low dose of 5 mg once or twice a day, taken with breakfast and lunch, and gradually increase it if needed.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth with water, usually with or after a meal to reduce stomach upset; tablets can be divided if needed. The last dose should not be taken within 4 hours of bedtime to avoid sleep problems.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 60 mg.

  • Joint pain
  • Fever
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Unusual sleepiness or drowsiness
  • Panic attack
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Toothache
  • Itching, rash, or hives
  • Excessive sweating
  • Cough, sore throat or irritated nose/throat, shortness of breath, or chest pain
  • Changes in blood pressure (often high), fast heart rate, cold hands and feet
  • Tremors, dizziness, uncontrolled movements, feeling restless inside, unusual activity
  • Aggression, agitation, restlessness, anxiety, depression, stress, irritability, abnormal behavior, sleep problems, tiredness
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, thirst, or vomiting (often at start of treatment and lessened with food)
RARE
  • Constipation
  • Blood in urine
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Muscle pain, twitching, or tension
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, tearfulness, excessive awareness of surroundings, or tenseness
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Feeling confused
  • Dilated pupils or other vision problems
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Redness of skin, or raised red rash
  • Mania (unusual excitement, overactivity, and impulsiveness)
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Muscle cramps
  • Red spots on the skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of brain arteries
  • Liver problems (including liver failure or coma)
  • Changes in other test results (including liver function and blood tests)
  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts, abnormal thoughts, lack of feelings or emotional experiences, repeating tasks, obsessive focus on one thing
  • Numbness, tingling, or color changes in fingers and toes in the cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Convulsions (seizures, including epilepsy)
  • Peeling skin or purple-red patches
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms affecting eyes, head, neck, and body (due to temporary brain circulation problems)
  • Movement, vision, or speech problems (may be signs of brain circulation problems)
  • Decreased blood cell count (red, white, or platelets), increasing risk of infections, bleeding, and bruising
  • Sudden high temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe convulsions (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Migraine
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeats
  • Belief in unreal things, confusion
  • Severe abdominal pain (often with nausea and vomiting)
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Prolonged and sometimes painful erections, or more frequent erections
  • Excessive uncontrolled talkativeness
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Jaw muscle spasm (trismus)
  • Stuttering
  • Nosebleeds
  • Recurrent unwanted thoughts
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath (may be signs of heart problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Avoid if you have an overactive thyroid gland or high eye pressure (glaucoma).
  • Do not use if you have a tumor on your adrenal gland or an eating disorder like anorexia.
  • This medicine is not for you if you have very high blood pressure, serious heart problems (like heart attack, irregular heartbeat, heart failure), or blood vessel issues in the brain (like stroke).
  • Do not take if you have used certain antidepressants called MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days.

  • Inform your doctor if you have severe mental health conditions like psychosis, schizophrenia, or severe depression, as this medicine can worsen them.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, or a history of seizures/epilepsy.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
  • Inform your doctor about any uncontrolled body jerks (tics), mood swings, or aggression.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you experience an unexpected, painful erection lasting more than 2 hours.
