How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a low dose of 5 mg, once or twice daily with breakfast and lunch, and increase it gradually if needed.

Method

Take Medikinet tablets by mouth with water. The tablets can be divided if needed and can be taken with or after a meal to help prevent stomach upset.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 60 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Personality changes
  • Severe teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Decreased appetite
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Joint pain
  • Fever
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Unusual drowsiness or sluggishness
  • Panic attack
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Toothache
  • Itching, rash, or hives
  • Excessive sweating
  • Cough, sore throat or irritated nose and throat, shortness of breath, or chest pain
  • Changes in blood pressure (usually high blood pressure), rapid heart rate (tachycardia), cold hands and feet
  • Tremors, dizziness, uncontrollable movements, feeling of inner restlessness, unusual activity
  • Aggression, agitation, restlessness, anxiety, depression, stress, irritability, abnormal behavior, sleep disturbances, fatigue
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, stomach discomfort, indigestion, thirst, and vomiting
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Symptoms of psychosis: sensory or auditory hallucinations (feeling or hearing things that are not there)
  • Uncontrollable speech and movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reactions like rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Mood changes or shifts
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Muscle pain, muscle twitching, muscle stiffness
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, tearfulness, excessive awareness of surroundings, tension
  • Unusual excitement, overactivity, and lack of restraint (mania)
  • Changes in sexual desire
  • Feeling confused
  • Enlarged pupils, vision disturbances
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Skin redness, raised red rash
  • Heart attack
  • Seizures (convulsions, epilepsy with seizures)
  • Peeling skin or purple-red spots on the skin
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms affecting eye, head, neck, and body muscles and nerves - due to temporary brain circulation problems
  • Movement and vision disturbances, speech problems (these can be signs of brain circulation problems)
  • Decreased number of blood cells (red, white, and platelets), increasing risk of infections, bleeding, and bruising
  • Sudden high fever, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Repeated unwanted thoughts
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath (these could be signs of heart problems)
  • Sudden death
  • Muscle cramps
  • Red spots on the skin
  • Inflammation or blockage of brain arteries
  • Abnormal liver function including liver failure and coma
  • Changes in test results, including liver function tests and blood tests
  • Suicide attempts (including completed suicide), abnormal thoughts, lack of feelings or emotional experiences, repeating tasks, compulsive clinging to something specific
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white to blue to red) in fingers and toes when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeats
  • Grand mal seizures
  • Belief in unreal things, confusion
  • Severe abdominal pain, often with nausea and vomiting
  • Brain blood vessel problems (stroke, inflammation or blockages of brain arteries)
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Prolonged and sometimes painful erections, or increased number of erections
  • Excessive uncontrolled talkativeness
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasm that makes it hard to open the mouth (trismus)
  • Stuttering
  • Nosebleed

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you or your child have an overactive thyroid.
  • Do not take if you or your child have glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • Do not take if you or your child have a tumor on the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma).
  • Do not take if you or your child have an eating disorder, like anorexia.

  • Do not take if you or your child have very high blood pressure or narrowing of blood vessels, which can cause pain in arms and legs.
  • Do not take if you or your child have had heart problems, such as a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, heart failure, heart disease, or a congenital heart defect.
  • Do not take if you or your child have had blood vessel problems in the brain, such as a stroke, aneurysm, narrowed or blocked blood vessels, or vasculitis.
  • Do not take if you or your child are taking or have taken antidepressants called MAO inhibitors within the last 14 days.
  • Do not take if you or your child have mental health problems like psychopathic or borderline personality disorder, abnormal thoughts or visions, schizophrenia, severe mood disorder (e.g., suicidal thoughts, severe depression, or mania).
