Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Low blood pressure
  • Swelling of the face, skin, and throat
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Rash
COMMON
  • Kidney damage, problems urinating, or changes in urine amount
  • Blood in urine
  • Heart failure
  • High blood pressure
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Excess fluid in lungs causing breathlessness
  • Coma, seizures, confusion, or severe tiredness
  • Swelling of ankles, fingers, or face due to fluid retention
  • Dehydration
  • Increased or decreased potassium and/or sodium levels in blood
  • Dry mouth, thirst
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Feeling unwell
  • Increased acid in blood (metabolic acidosis)
  • Chest pain
  • Increased pressure in skull, headache, nausea, vomiting, back pain, blurred vision, or difficulty moving eyes
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Cramps
  • Blurred vision
  • Nosebleed
  • Skin tissue death
  • Swelling, pain, itching, rash, or redness at the infusion site or along the vein
  • Infusion leaking out of the vein into surrounding tissues, which can cause swelling, pain, and tissue damage.

Important Warnings

  • If you are allergic to mannitol.
  • If you have high salt levels in your blood (hypernatremia).
  • If you are severely dehydrated.
  • If your kidneys are not producing urine.
  • If you have severe heart disease (heart failure) or fluid in your lungs due to heart failure.

  • If you have bleeding in your skull or have recently had a severe head injury.
  • If the test dose given by your doctor or nurse is not effective enough.
  • If your kidney function worsens after starting mannitol treatment.
  • If your doctor has told you that you have low sodium (salt) levels in your blood (hyponatremia).
  • Do not give this solution with a blood transfusion through the same needle, as it can harm red blood cells or cause them to clump.
