How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults, adolescents over 12, and pregnant women is 1-3 tablets (100-300 mg) daily. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

You can take your daily dose all at once or spread it throughout the day. Take Maltofer with or without food, but taking it with or right after a meal may help reduce stomach upset. You can chew or swallow the tablets whole.

Important

Do not take more than 3 tablets in one day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dark stool color (this is harmless and expected).
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
RARE
  • Vomiting
  • Tooth discoloration (can be avoided by swallowing tablets whole and cleaning teeth well).
  • Upset stomach or inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis), which can cause burning pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
  • Itching
  • Rash, hives, or skin redness.
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Maltofer if you are allergic to iron(III) hydroxide polymaltose complex or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Maltofer if you have too much iron in your body (e.g., hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis).
  • Do not take Maltofer if your anemia is caused by something other than iron deficiency, such as increased breakdown of red blood cells or a lack of vitamin B12.
  • Do not take Maltofer if you have a disorder where your body cannot use iron properly (e.g., lead poisoning anemia, sideroblastic anemia, thalassemia).
  • Maltofer is not recommended for children under 12 years old.

  • Do not use other injectable iron medicines at the same time as Maltofer, as this can reduce how much iron your body absorbs from Maltofer.
  • If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, talk to your doctor before taking Maltofer.
  • If you take too much Maltofer, contact your doctor or poison control center immediately.
