Madopar contains two active ingredients, levodopa and benserazide, and is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, which is personal and starts small, taken several times a day, increasing gradually until it works well.

Method

Take your medicine half an hour before or one hour after a meal. Tablets can be swallowed whole, divided, crushed, or chewed. Depot capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of liquid and not chewed. Quick soluble tablets should be dissolved in half a glass of water and taken within 30 minutes, stirring before use.

Possible Side Effects

  • Loss of appetite.

  • Depression, agitation (restlessness), anxiety, insomnia, increased drowsiness.

  • Loss or change of taste.

  • Dizziness (when standing up quickly).

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, discoloration of saliva, tongue, teeth, and mouth lining.

  • Itching and rash.

  • Changes in blood count (seen in blood tests).

  • Sudden sleep attacks during the day, hallucinations, delusions, confusion, disorientation, dopamine dysregulation syndrome (overuse of medicine).

  • Involuntary movements and sudden changes in mobility after long-term use, and fluctuations in drug effect.

  • Heart rhythm disorders.

  • Liver problems (found in lab tests).

  • Discolored urine, increased urea in blood.

  • Impulse control disorders such as strong urges to gamble, increased sex drive, uncontrolled shopping or spending, and binge eating or compulsive eating.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to levodopa, benserazide, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney, liver, or heart problems.
  • Do not take if you have severe hormone problems (like overactive thyroid) or certain mental illnesses.
  • Do not take if you have narrow-angle glaucoma (an eye condition).
  • Do not take if you are under 25 years old.

  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take if you are also taking a combination of MAO-A and MAO-B inhibitors.
  • Madopar depot capsules contain soy oil. Do not use if you are allergic to peanuts or soy.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family notice unusual urges or behaviors, like gambling, overeating, excessive spending, or increased sex drive, as these could be impulse control disorders.
  • Be careful when driving or operating machines, as Madopar can make you sleepy or cause sudden sleep attacks; if this happens, avoid driving and using machines and talk to your doctor.
  • Do not use Madopar with medicines containing adrenaline, noradrenaline, amphetamine, isoprenaline, methyldopa, amitriptyline, or imipramine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can cause dangerous side effects.
