How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, usually between 150 mg and 600 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water. Take Lyribastad 2 or 3 times a day, as your doctor tells you. If twice a day, take one capsule in the morning and one in the evening around the same time. If three times a day, take one capsule in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening around the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 600 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, headache
  • Increased appetite
  • Mood changes (like feeling happy or confused), irritability, less interest in sex
  • Trouble concentrating, clumsiness, memory problems, shaking, speech difficulties, tingling or numbness, feeling tired or sleepy, trouble sleeping, feeling abnormal
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Dizziness (like spinning), balance problems, falls
  • Dry mouth, constipation, vomiting, gas, diarrhea, nausea, bloated stomach
  • Erection problems
  • Swelling in your body, including arms and legs
  • Feeling drunk, walking unusually
  • Weight gain
  • Muscle cramps, joint pain, back pain, limb pain
  • Sore throat
RARE
  • Changes in appetite (less or more), weight loss, low or high blood sugar
  • More intense mood changes (like feeling restless, depressed, agitated, angry, very happy), trouble finding words, seeing or hearing things that aren't real, unusual dreams, panic attacks, not caring, mental problems, trouble thinking, increased sex drive, sexual problems (like trouble having an orgasm or delayed ejaculation)
  • More vision issues (like tunnel vision, flashes of light, jerky eye movements, weak reflexes, hyperactivity, dizziness when standing), sensitive skin, loss of taste, burning feeling, shaking with movement, reduced awareness, passing out or fainting, more sensitive to noise, generally feeling unwell
  • Dry, swollen, painful, watery, or irritated eyes, poor eyesight
  • Heart problems (changes in heart rhythm, fast heartbeat, low or high blood pressure, heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms seen on an ECG)
  • Flushing, hot flashes
  • Breathing difficulties, dry or stuffy nose, shallow breathing
  • Increased saliva, heartburn, numbness around the mouth
  • Sweating, rash, chills, fever, hives, runny nose, nosebleeds, cough, snoring (general allergic or flu-like symptoms)
  • Muscle twitching, joint swelling, stiff muscles, muscle pain, neck pain, muscle damage
  • Chest pain, chest tightness
  • Urinary problems (trouble or pain when urinating, leaking urine, reduced urine output, not being able to urinate, kidney failure)
  • Weakness, thirst
  • Changes in blood or liver tests (e.g., higher creatine kinase, liver enzymes, lower platelets or white blood cells)
  • Painful or missed periods, breast discharge, abnormal breast growth (even in men)
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Smell disorder, shaky vision, changes in how you see depth, brighter vision, loss of vision, dilated pupils, squinting
  • Cold sweat, tight throat, swollen tongue
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Trouble swallowing, slow or reduced movement, trouble writing
  • Fluid in the abdomen or lungs
  • Seizures
  • Lack of inhibition, suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Severe skin reactions (like red target-shaped patches or rings with blisters, peeling skin, sores in mouth/throat/nose/genitals/eyes; can be preceded by fever and flu-like symptoms like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice), liver failure, hepatitis
  • Parkinson's-like symptoms (tremor, slow movement, stiffness)
  • Dependence on the medicine

Important Warnings

  • If you have swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a widespread rash, tell your doctor right away as these could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • If you develop severe skin reactions like red patches, blisters, or peeling skin (which can be preceded by fever and flu-like symptoms), stop taking Lyribastad and get medical help immediately.
  • Lyribastad can cause dizziness and sleepiness, which may increase your risk of falls. Be careful until you know how this medicine affects you.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you notice any changes in your vision, such as blurred vision or loss of sight.
  • If you have diabetes and gain weight, your diabetes medication might need to be adjusted.

  • If you have a heart condition, especially if you are elderly, tell your doctor before taking Lyribastad, as it has been linked to heart failure.
  • If you notice you are urinating less, tell your doctor, as this could be a sign of kidney problems.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have constipation, especially if you are prone to it or take other medicines that cause constipation.
  • If you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, tell your doctor, as you might be at a higher risk of becoming dependent on Lyribastad.
  • If you experience seizures during or after treatment, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you have severe liver or kidney disease, tell your doctor, as Lyribastad has been linked to brain problems in some patients with other underlying conditions.
  • If you have trouble breathing or shallow breathing, contact your doctor. This is especially important if you have a nervous system or lung disease, kidney problems, or are over 65 years old.
  • Do not stop taking Lyribastad suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms like trouble sleeping, headache, anxiety, or pain.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Addiction may develop. (updated 14.4.2025)
