How to Use

Dosage

Treatment usually starts with 500 mg Lyomet daily; your doctor may adjust the dose after two weeks based on your blood sugar levels.

Method

Take tablets whole with a glass of water, usually once daily with your evening meal; always take with food, and do not chew, break, or crush them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg of Lyomet.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite
  • taste disturbance
  • decreased or low vitamin B12 levels in the blood (may cause extreme tiredness, sore and red tongue, tingling skin, or pale/yellowish skin)
RARE
  • lactic acidosis (a very rare but serious side effect that can lead to coma; stop taking and seek immediate medical help)
  • abnormal liver function tests and hepatitis (liver inflammation) which may cause yellowing of the skin or eyes (yellowing of eyes/skin requires immediate medical contact)
  • skin reactions such as redness, itching, or hives

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Lyomet if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Lyomet if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Do not take Lyomet if your diabetes is uncontrolled, with high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis.
  • Stop taking Lyomet and ask your doctor if you are dehydrated, for example due to severe vomiting, diarrhea, or fever.
  • Do not take Lyomet if you have a severe infection that might affect your kidneys.

  • Do not take Lyomet if you have heart problems, recently had a heart attack, or have severe circulation or breathing difficulties.
  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol while taking Lyomet, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Do not give this medicine to children and adolescents under 18 years old.
  • If you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis (such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general weakness, breathing difficulties, low body temperature, and slow heartbeat), stop taking Lyomet immediately and seek medical help from a doctor or the nearest hospital.
  • If you are going to have an examination involving iodinated contrast media, you must stop taking Lyomet before or during the procedure.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to breastfeed, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine.
