How to Use

Dosage

Treatment usually starts with 500 mg of Lyomet per day.

Method

Take the tablets whole with a glass of water, with food, usually once daily in the evening. Do not chew or crush the tablets.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Taste disturbance
  • Low vitamin B12 levels in the blood, which may cause extreme tiredness, a sore red tongue, tingling skin, or pale/yellowish skin.
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis (a very serious condition where too much acid builds up in your blood), which can lead to coma. Stop taking Lyomet and seek immediate medical help if you experience symptoms (see warnings for symptoms).
  • Abnormal liver function tests and hepatitis (liver inflammation), which can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). Seek immediate medical help if you notice this.
  • Skin reactions such as redness, itching, or hives.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Lyomet if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Lyomet if you have long-term liver problems.
  • Do not take Lyomet if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take Lyomet if your diabetes is not well controlled, with symptoms like very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or if you have ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis (a serious condition where too much acid builds up in your blood).
  • Stop taking Lyomet temporarily and contact your doctor if you have severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or drink less fluid than usual, as these can lead to dehydration and kidney problems.

  • Do not take Lyomet if you have a severe infection affecting your lungs, airways, or kidneys, as this can lead to kidney problems and increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Do not take Lyomet if you have heart problems, recently had a heart attack, severe circulation problems, or breathing difficulties, as this can lead to lack of oxygen in your tissues and increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking Lyomet, as this increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Lyomet should not be used by children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
  • If you are having major surgery, you must stop taking Lyomet for a certain period before, during, and after the procedure. Your doctor will tell you when to stop and restart.
  • If you are having an injection of iodine-containing contrast agent for an X-ray or scan, you must stop taking Lyomet before or at the time of the injection. Your doctor will advise you.
  • Lyomet is not recommended if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor for advice.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have a genetic disease affecting mitochondria (e.g., MELAS syndrome, MIDD diabetes) or if you experience seizures, cognitive issues, movement problems, nerve damage symptoms, migraine, or deafness after starting Lyomet.
