How to Use

Dosage

Usually, start by taking 500 mg of Lyomet tablets daily.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with a glass of water, always with food, usually once daily with your evening meal. Your doctor might sometimes recommend twice daily.

Important

The maximum dose is 2000 mg of Lyomet tablets daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • nausea
  • stomach pain
  • loss of appetite
  • taste disturbance (changes in taste)
  • low or reduced vitamin B12 levels in the blood (may cause extreme tiredness, a sore or red tongue, tingling skin, or pale/yellow skin)
RARE
  • nausea, stomach pain, muscle cramps, tiredness, general unwell feeling, difficulty breathing, low body temperature, slow heartbeat (symptoms of lactic acidosis)
  • abnormal liver test results
  • liver inflammation (hepatitis) which can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • skin reactions, such as skin redness, itching, or hives (itchy rash)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Lyomet if you are allergic to metformin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have long-term liver problems.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not use if your diabetes is not well-controlled and you have very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis.
  • Do not use if you are severely dehydrated (lost a lot of body fluids), for example, due to severe diarrhea or repeated vomiting.

  • Do not use if you have a severe infection, such as one affecting your lungs, airways, or kidneys.
  • Do not use if you have severe heart problems, such as a recent heart attack, severe circulation problems, or breathing difficulties.
  • Do not use if you drink a lot of alcohol.
  • Do not use if you are under 18 years old.
  • Stop taking Lyomet temporarily if you are dehydrated or have lost a lot of fluids (e.g., from severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or not drinking enough).
  • Stop Lyomet immediately and contact your doctor or nearest hospital if you have symptoms of lactic acidosis, as it can lead to coma.
  • If you are having major surgery, you must stop taking Lyomet before and for some time after the procedure. Your doctor will tell you when exactly.
  • Lyomet does not usually cause low blood sugar on its own. However, if you take it with other diabetes medicines, the risk of low blood sugar increases. If you experience symptoms (e.g., weakness, dizziness, sweating), eat or drink something sugary.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking Lyomet, as it can increase the risk of severe lactic acidosis.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
