How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults is 20 mg once a day for 4 to 8 weeks, but your doctor will tell you the exact dose.

Method

Take tablets in the morning, whole with at least half a glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush them.

Important

The maximum daily dose can be up to 60 mg, as directed by your doctor for specific conditions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach problems (diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Benign stomach polyps
RARE
  • Swelling of feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling, drowsiness
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Changes in blood tests for liver function
  • Skin rash, hives, and itchy skin
  • General feeling of not being well and lack of energy
  • Changes in blood cells (like low white blood cells or platelets), leading to weakness, bruising, or more infections
  • Low sodium in blood, causing weakness, nausea (vomiting), and cramps
  • Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
  • Taste changes
  • Vision problems, like blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Dry mouth
  • Mouth inflammation
  • Thrush (yeast infection in mouth), which can also affect the gut
  • Hair loss
  • Rash from sunlight exposure
  • Joint pain or muscle pain
  • Severe kidney problems (interstitial nephritis)
  • Increased sweating
  • Severe drop in white blood cells (agranulocytosis), leading to more infections
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there)
  • Severe liver problems, possibly leading to liver failure or brain inflammation
  • Erythema multiforme (a severe skin reaction)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Enlargement of breast glands in men
  • Low magnesium in the blood, which can cause tiredness, muscle cramps, confusion, or a fast heartbeat

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get a serious allergic reaction (like swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing), severe skin rash, or yellow skin/dark urine (signs of liver problems).
  • Tell your doctor if you have unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain, vomit food or blood, or have black stools.
  • Taking this medicine for a long time (over a year) may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures.
  • If you get a rash, especially on skin exposed to the sun, tell your doctor as treatment may need to be stopped.
  • If you experience less urine, blood in urine, fever, rash, or joint pain, tell your doctor as these could be signs of kidney inflammation.

  • Long-term use may affect Vitamin B12 absorption. Tell your doctor if you feel very tired, tingly, have a sore tongue, muscle weakness, vision problems, or memory issues.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
