How to Use

Dosage

For most adults with high blood pressure, the usual starting dose is one 50 mg tablet once daily. Your doctor might increase this to 100 mg once daily. For children (6-18 years, 20-50 kg), the starting dose is 0.7 mg per kg once daily, up to 25 mg. For adults with heart failure, the starting dose is 12.5 mg once daily, gradually increasing up to 150 mg. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take your dose at about the same time each day. Avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

Important

The maximum daily dose for high blood pressure in adults is typically 100 mg. For heart failure, it can be up to 150 mg, as directed by your doctor. For children (6-18 years, 20-50 kg), the maximum dose is 25 mg. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions.

Possible Side Effects

  • Low blood pressure, especially when dehydrated (e.g., with severe heart failure or high doses of water pills)
  • Dizziness when standing up too quickly (orthostatic effects)

  • Changes in kidney function, including kidney failure

  • Increased urea, creatinine, and potassium in the blood for heart failure patients

  • Headache
  • Sleep disorders
  • Fast heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Severe chest pain (angina pectoris)
  • Shortness of breath

  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Rash
  • Local swelling (edema)
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis)
  • Numbness or tingling (paresthesia)
  • Fainting (syncope)
  • Very fast and irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
  • Stroke
  • Swelling in the intestines (intestinal angioedema) with symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (ALAT), usually returning to normal after stopping the medicine
  • Decreased platelet count
  • Migraine
  • Changes in taste
  • Ringing, buzzing, roaring, or clicking in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Depression
  • General feeling of illness (malaise)
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Unexplained muscle pain with dark (tea-colored) urine (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity)
  • Impotence
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Low blood sodium levels (hyponatremia)
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Back pain
  • Urinary tract infection

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to losartan or any other ingredient in Losatrix.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not take if you are more than 3 months pregnant (avoid also in early pregnancy).
  • Do not take if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine called aliskiren.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue (angioedema).

  • Tell your doctor if you have severe vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are on a low-salt diet or taking water pills, as this can lead to dehydration.
  • Tell your doctor if you have narrowing of blood vessels to your kidneys, a recent kidney transplant, or weak liver function.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart failure with kidney problems or irregular heartbeats, or any other heart or blood vessel disease.
  • Avoid grapefruit juice while taking Losatrix.
  • If you experience stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea after taking Losatrix, talk to your doctor. Do not stop taking Losatrix on your own.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
