How to Use

Dosage

Typically, one 50 mg/12.5 mg tablet once daily. Your doctor may adjust this to one 100 mg/25 mg tablet or two 50 mg/12.5 mg tablets daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is two 50 mg/12.5 mg tablets or one 100 mg/25 mg tablet.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Cough, upper respiratory infection, stuffy nose, sinus problems
  • Diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, indigestion
  • Muscle aches or cramps, leg pain, back pain
  • Trouble sleeping, headache, dizziness
  • Feeling weak, tired, chest pain
  • Increased potassium in blood (may cause irregular heartbeat), decreased hemoglobin (a substance in red blood cells), changes in kidney function including kidney failure
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction: hives, itching, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat, causing difficulty breathing or swallowing. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Sudden severe breathing difficulty: signs include intense shortness of breath, fever, weakness, and confusion. Seek immediate medical help.
  • Anemia (low red blood cells), red or brown spots on the skin, bruising, low white blood cells, problems with blood clotting, or low platelets (cells that help blood clot)
  • Loss of appetite, increased uric acid (which can cause gout), high blood sugar, problems with body salts (electrolytes)
  • Anxiety, nervousness, panic attacks, confusion, depression, unusual dreams, sleep problems, drowsiness, memory loss
  • Tingling or prickling sensations, limb pain, shaking, migraine, fainting
  • Blurred vision, burning or stinging in eyes, conjunctivitis (eye infection), decreased vision, seeing yellow, ringing or buzzing in ears, spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Low blood pressure (especially when standing up), chest pain during activity, irregular heartbeat, stroke, heart attack, fast heartbeat
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (often with rash or bruising), sore throat, shortness of breath, bronchitis, pneumonia, fluid in lungs, nosebleeds, runny or stuffy nose
  • Constipation (including severe), gas, stomach upset or cramps, vomiting, dry mouth, inflamed salivary glands, toothache, jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), inflamed pancreas or liver, abnormal liver function tests, swelling in the intestines (with stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
  • Hives, itching, skin inflammation, rash, red skin, sensitivity to light, dry skin, flushing, sweating, hair loss
  • Pain in arms, shoulders, hips, knees, or other joints, swollen joints, stiffness, muscle weakness
  • Frequent urination at night, abnormal kidney function (including kidney inflammation), urinary tract infection, sugar in urine
  • Decreased sexual desire, impotence
  • Facial swelling, local swelling (edema), fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to losartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or similar medicines called sulfonamides.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant, and it should be avoided in early pregnancy, as it can harm your baby.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney problems, or if your kidneys do not produce urine.
  • Do not use if you have very low potassium or sodium, or very high calcium levels that cannot be corrected by treatment.
  • Do not use if you have gout (a type of arthritis).

  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking aliskiren for high blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have blurry vision or eye pain, as this could lead to permanent vision loss if not treated.
  • Get medical help immediately if you develop severe shortness of breath or breathing difficulties after taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had swelling of your face, lips, throat, or tongue (angioedema).
  • This medicine may slightly raise your risk of certain skin cancers with long-term use. Protect your skin from sun and UV light.
  • Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine is not for children.
  • Eating too much salt can make this medicine less effective.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Effectiveness is reduced in renal impairment. Consider risk of orthostatic hypotension and hyponatraemia and -kalemia. (updated 19.5.2025)
