How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is one 50 mg tablet once daily; your doctor may increase this to 100 mg once daily.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with a glass of water, ideally at the same time each day, with or without food. The 50 mg tablet can be divided.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 150 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure, especially after severe fluid loss.
  • Dizziness or light-headedness when standing up quickly.
  • Weakness
  • Tiredness
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • High potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia)
  • Changes in kidney function, including kidney failure.
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Increased levels of urea, creatinine, or potassium in the blood in heart failure patients.
RARE
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Sleep problems
  • Feeling of fast heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Severe chest pain (angina pectoris)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Local swelling (edema)
  • Cough
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue (angioedema)
  • Swelling in the gut (intestinal angioedema) with symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), including Henoch-Schönlein purpura.
  • Numbness or tingling sensation (paresthesia)
  • Fainting (syncope)
  • Very fast and irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
  • Stroke
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (ALAT), which usually normalize after stopping treatment.
  • Low platelet count
  • Migraine
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Back pain and urinary tract infections
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity)
  • Unexplained muscle pain and dark urine (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Impotence
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia)
  • Depression
  • General feeling of illness (malaise)
  • Ringing, buzzing, humming, or clicking in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Taste disorder (dysgeusia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to losartan or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are more than 3 months pregnant, as it can harm your baby. Avoid during early pregnancy too.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine that contains aliskiren.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had swelling of your face, lips, throat, or tongue (angioedema) before.

  • Inform your doctor if you have severe vomiting, diarrhea, are taking diuretics (water pills), or follow a low-salt diet, as this can lead to dehydration.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
