Losarion contains losartan, a medicine that blocks a substance called angiotensin II, which helps to lower high blood pressure and slow down kidney damage in people with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 50 mg of losartan (one 50 mg tablet) once a day. For some patients, the dose may be increased to 100 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet with a glass of water, trying to take it around the same time each day. It can be taken with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for high blood pressure is typically 100 mg.

  • High potassium levels in blood (hyperkalemia)

  • Increased blood urea, serum creatinine, and potassium in patients with heart failure.

  • Feeling of a fast heartbeat (palpitations)

  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (ALAT), which usually return to normal after stopping treatment
  • Allergy (anaphylactic reaction)
  • Intestinal angioedema: swelling in the intestines with symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Losarion if you are allergic to losartan or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Losarion if you are more than 3 months pregnant (it's also best to avoid Losarion in early pregnancy).
  • Do not take Losarion if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not take Losarion if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure-lowering medicine that contains aliskiren.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat, and/or tongue).

  • Tell your doctor if you have had severe vomiting or diarrhea, which can lead to a significant loss of fluids and salts.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking diuretics (water pills) or are on a low-salt diet, as this can lead to fluid and salt loss.
  • Tell your doctor if you have narrowing or blockage of blood vessels to your kidneys, or if you recently had a kidney transplant.
  • Tell your doctor if you have mild to moderate liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart failure, especially if it involves kidney problems or life-threatening heart rhythm issues.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a heart valve or heart muscle disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have coronary artery disease (reduced blood flow to the heart) or cerebrovascular disease (reduced blood flow to the brain).
  • Tell your doctor if you have primary hyperaldosteronism (a condition where your adrenal glands make too much of the hormone aldosterone).
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines for high blood pressure, especially ACE inhibitors (like enalapril, lisinopril, ramipril), particularly if you have diabetes-related kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that can increase the potassium levels in your blood.
  • Do not stop taking Losarion on your own; always talk to your doctor first.
  • If you experience a severe allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat, which may cause difficulty swallowing or breathing), stop taking the tablets and contact your doctor or nearest emergency room immediately.
