Lorazepam Macure is a calming medicine (a benzodiazepine) used to reduce anxiety before procedures, manage severe anxiety, and treat certain types of seizures.

How to Use

Dosage

For procedures: 0.044-0.05 mg per kg body weight (up to 4 mg total), given by injection. For severe anxiety: 2-4 mg (0.05 mg per kg body weight) by injection, with a second dose possible after 2 hours. For seizures: 4 mg intravenously for adults; half for elderly; 0.1 mg per kg body weight (up to 4 mg total) intravenously for children 1 month and older.

Method

Given as an injection into a vein (intravenously) or a muscle (intramuscularly).

Important

For adults, the maximum is usually 8 mg per day, given as two doses. For children under 5, a maximum of two doses per day.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to lorazepam, other benzodiazepines, or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have myasthenia gravis (a disease causing muscle weakness).
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems.
  • Do not use if you have sleep apnea (breathing problems during sleep).
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.

  • Do not drive or operate machinery for 24-48 hours after taking this medicine.
  • You might not remember what happened right after you received the medicine.
  • This medicine can affect people with depression and may cause suicidal thoughts. The dose must be reduced gradually.
  • To lower the risk of dependence, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible.
  • Stopping this medicine suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms like headache, muscle pain, extreme fear, anxiety, restlessness, confusion, irritability, mood swings, depression, and trouble sleeping.
  • Do not drink alcohol for 48 hours after taking this medicine, as it can make the effects stronger.
  • This medicine contains benzyl alcohol, which can cause serious breathing problems in young children. Do not give to newborns (under 4 weeks old) or to children under 3 years for more than one week without doctor's advice.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. For short-term use only. Increases the risk of drug addiction, cognitive disorder and traffic accidents. Increases risk of falls. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. (updated 15.1.2024)
