How to Use

Dosage

Start with 2 capsules (4 mg), then take 1 capsule (2 mg) after each loose bowel movement.

Method

Swallow capsules whole with liquid. Do not chew them. You can take them with or without food, any time of day.

Important

Adults should not take more than 6 capsules (12 mg) per day. Young people over 12 should not take more than 4 capsules (8 mg) per day.

  • Tongue pain
  • Hives or itching
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Feeling very tired
  • Signs of pancreas inflammation (severe upper stomach pain radiating to the back, tender stomach, fever, fast heartbeat, nausea, vomiting)
  • Severe skin reactions (e.g., rash, peeling skin, mouth sores, blisters on mouth and lips)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to loperamide hydrochloride or any other ingredient.
  • Do not give to children under 2 years old. For children 2-12 years, a prescription is needed.
  • Do not use if you have blood in your stool or a high fever.
  • Do not use if you have severe bowel inflammation (like acute ulcerative colitis or bacterial/pseudomembranous colitis).
  • Do not use if you have constipation, a swollen stomach, or a blocked bowel.

  • Do not take more than the recommended dose; too much can cause serious heart problems.
  • Diarrhea causes fluid loss; drink extra liquids. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about rehydration.
  • If symptoms don't improve within 48 hours, stop taking the medicine and see a doctor.
  • Do not use if your doctor told you to avoid medicines that slow bowel movements, for example, if you have constipation or a swollen stomach.
  • If you have AIDS and your stomach swells, stop taking this medicine and see a doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, as you may need close monitoring.
  • If you feel tired, sleepy, or dizzy, do not drive or use machines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For treatment of diarrhoea for no more than two days. Do not use for the treatment of febrile diarrhoea. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 20.5.2024)
