Lopacut

Lopacut contains loperamide hydrochloride and is used to treat sudden, short-term diarrhea in adults and adolescents over 12 years.

How to Use

Dosage

Start with 2 tablets, then take 1 tablet after each loose stool. Do not take a new dose sooner than 2-3 hours after the first dose.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth.

Important

Do not take more than 6 tablets (12 mg) per day for adults, and 4 tablets (8 mg) per day for adolescents. Do not use for more than 2 days without a doctor's advice.

  • Difficulty urinating (urinary retention)
  • Bowel blockage (ileus)
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Enlarged large intestine (including toxic megacolon)
  • Allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Itchy skin (pruritus)
  • Rapid swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema)
  • Severe skin and mucous membrane changes (blistering rashes)
  • Fatigue
  • Lethargy (feeling tired or sluggish)
  • Acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Lopacut if you are allergic to loperamide or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not use Lopacut if you have blood in your stool or a high fever along with diarrhea.
  • Do not use Lopacut if you have severe inflammation of your large intestine (like ulcerative colitis or inflammation caused by antibiotics).
  • Do not use Lopacut if you have a gut infection caused by bacteria (e.g., Salmonella, Shigella, or Campylobacter).
  • Do not use Lopacut if your digestion is already slow, for example, if you have constipation or your stomach is swollen.

  • Do not use Lopacut if you have long-term (chronic) diarrhea.
  • Lopacut is not for children under 12 years old.
  • If your diarrhea does not get better within 2 days of taking Lopacut, stop using it and contact your doctor.
  • If you become constipated or notice your bowels slowing down too much while using Lopacut, stop taking it and contact your doctor.
  • If you have liver problems, talk to your doctor before you start taking Lopacut.
  • Diarrhea can cause your body to lose a lot of water. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • If you have AIDS, stop taking Lopacut right away if your stomach starts to swell.
  • Never take more than the recommended dose. Taking too much loperamide can cause serious heart problems, such as a fast or irregular heartbeat.
  • Stop Lopacut and tell your doctor immediately if you have swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble swallowing or breathing, or hives (a rash with itchy bumps).
  • Stop Lopacut and tell your doctor immediately if you have severe skin irritation, redness, or blisters on your skin, mouth, eyes, or genitals.
  • Stop Lopacut and tell your doctor immediately if you have severe pain in your upper stomach that goes to your back, a tender stomach, fever, fast pulse, nausea, or vomiting. These can be signs of inflammation of the pancreas (acute pancreatitis).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For treatment of diarrhoea for no more than two days. Do not use for the treatment of febrile diarrhoea. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 20.5.2024)
