How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your exact dose based on your height and weight, usually about 200 mg for adults and 100 mg for children. You will take it as a single dose or split into doses over 3 days, every 6-8 weeks.

Method

Take the capsules by mouth. Swallow them whole, without opening.

Important

Do not take a new dose for at least 6 weeks. Your doctor will determine the maximum dose for each treatment cycle, which is given over 1 to 3 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood cell counts (platelets, white, red) which can cause unusual bleeding or bruising, make you more prone to infections, and lead to weakness, tiredness, and trouble breathing.
  • Feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), and not wanting to eat.
  • Infections, like shingles.
  • Trouble coordinating movements or speaking clearly.
  • Feeling confused or having trouble knowing where you are or what time it is.
  • Soreness or inflammation in the mouth lining.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Temporary liver problems with higher liver enzyme levels.
  • Unusual lack of energy, feeling overly sleepy or sluggish.
RARE
  • Apathy (lack of interest or emotion), stuttering.
  • Severe kidney problems or damage, with symptoms like swelling in hands/feet or changes in how often you pee.
  • Serious lung disease with scarring, causing shortness of breath and a dry cough.
  • Hair loss.
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Problems with sperm production in men or egg production in women.
  • Secondary cancers, including some types of blood cancer or problems with bone marrow.
  • Long-lasting vision loss (especially when used with radiation therapy).
  • Lung inflammation (thickening of lung tissue due to inflammation).
  • Increased levels of waste products in the blood.
  • Shrinking of the kidneys.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to lomustine, other similar medicines (nitrosoureas), or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not get live vaccines (like yellow fever vaccine) during treatment or for at least 3 months after treatment.
  • This medicine can reduce your blood cell count, which means you could bleed or get infections more easily. Your doctor will check your blood regularly.
  • Do not take a new dose of this medicine for at least 6 weeks after your last dose, as it affects your bone marrow for a long time.

  • Handle the capsules carefully and wash your hands with soap and water after touching them, as this is a cancer medicine.
