How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults with acute oxygen deficiency is 3-4 liters per minute with nasal prongs or 5-15 liters per minute with a mask.

Method

Medical Oxygen AWO is taken by inhaling it. It is usually breathed in through nasal prongs or a mask, but oxygen can also be given with a breathing machine.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is 15 liters per minute, if your doctor decides so.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dry and irritated nasal mucous membranes.
RARE
  • Collapsed lung air sacs (alveoli).
  • Breathing-related pain and dry cough.
  • Acute Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).
  • Anemia (low red blood cells).
  • Effects on lungs, heart, kidneys, and liver.
RARE
  • Retinal damage that may lead to impaired vision (in newborns treated with high concentrations).
RARE
  • Discomfort or pain in the ears.
  • Eardrum rupture.
  • Sinus pain.
  • Temporary muscle pain.
  • Nausea, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, muscle twitching.
  • Unconsciousness and epileptic seizures.
  • Impaired vision (short-sightedness), which usually improves within weeks or months after stopping treatment.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Medical Oxygen AWO if you have an untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung).
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you have any chronic lung disease before using this medicine.
  • Do not use oil or grease near the equipment. Handle equipment with clean, grease-free hands. Contact with oil or grease can cause an explosion risk.
  • Always keep the oxygen cylinder upright. If it tips over, liquid oxygen can leak out and cause severe frostbite.
  • Smoking and open flames are strictly forbidden when using Medical Oxygen AWO.

  • Do not place an oxygen mask or nasal prongs directly on textiles. Textiles saturated with oxygen are highly flammable.
  • If you have taken too much medicine, contact your doctor, hospital, or Poison Information Centre (tel. 0800 147 111) immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you are using the cancer medicine bleomycin or the heart rhythm medicine amiodarone, as these medicines with oxygen can harm your lungs.
