How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. It's usually one or two 10 mg pills (10-20 mg) once a day.

Method

Swallow the pill with water. Try to take it at the same time every day. You can take it with or without food. You can break the pill in half if needed.

Important

Your doctor will decide your highest daily dose, which is usually up to 20 mg for most adults.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or feeling weak, especially when you stand up quickly
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry cough
  • Vomiting
  • Kidney problems
RARE
  • Changes in mood or feeling down
  • Serious allergic reactions with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, causing trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Heart attack or stroke, fast heartbeat
  • Skin rash, itching, psoriasis, or severe skin reactions (redness, blisters, peeling)
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), which could be a sign of liver problems
  • Very low blood sugar
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., fewer red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets)
  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection (impotence)
  • Vision or hearing changes
  • Altered taste
  • Drowsiness or trouble sleeping
  • Runny nose
  • Stomach pain or indigestion
  • General weakness or tiredness
  • High potassium levels in blood
  • Dry mouth

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to lisinopril or similar medicines (ACE inhibitors), or if you have had serious swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat (called angioedema) that caused trouble breathing or swallowing.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant or trying to get pregnant. This medicine can harm your baby.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a medicine called aliskiren. Also, do not use if you are taking sacubitril/valsartan for heart failure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe vomiting, diarrhea, are on a low-salt diet, or take water pills (diuretics). This can make your blood pressure drop too low.
  • Get medical help right away if you get very dizzy after your first dose, or if you have sudden swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat (which can make it hard to breathe or swallow), fever, sore throat, mouth sores, or yellow skin or eyes.

  • Tell your doctor about any heart problems (like a thickened heart muscle or narrow heart valves), kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, or immune system diseases like lupus.
  • If you get a dry cough that doesn't go away while taking this medicine, talk to your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
