How to Use

Dosage

Usually, adults and children 10 years or older start with 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust this dose.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food, at any time of day, but try to take it at the same time every day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nasal inflammation, sore throat, nosebleeds
  • Allergic reactions
  • High blood sugar (monitor if diabetic), increased muscle enzyme (creatine kinase) levels
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain
  • Abnormal liver function tests
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, tongue, and throat, causing breathing difficulties.
  • Severe skin condition with peeling and swelling, blisters on skin, mouth, eyes, genitals, and fever; rash with pink-red patches especially on palms or soles.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, rupture, or reddish-brown urine (rhabdomyolysis), which can be life-threatening and cause kidney damage.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising, possibly indicating liver problems.
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, low blood sugar (monitor if diabetic).
  • Nightmares, insomnia.
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, reduced sense of pain or touch, altered taste, memory loss.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Ringing in the ears and/or head.
  • Vomiting, burping, upper and lower abdominal pain, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas causing stomach pain).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss.
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue.
  • Fatigue, feeling unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in ankles), fever.
  • Positive white blood cell test in urine.
  • Visual disturbance.
  • Bile duct obstruction (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes).
  • Tendon injury.
  • Skin rash or mouth ulcers (lichenoid drug reaction).
  • Purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation).
  • Allergic reaction with sudden wheezing, chest pain/tightness, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue, throat, breathing difficulties, fainting.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men).
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles).
  • Ocular myasthenia (weakness in eye muscles).
  • Sexual difficulties.
  • Depression.
  • Breathing problems, such as persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fat levels, are overweight, or have high blood pressure).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you have or have had liver disease, or if your liver blood tests are unclear.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • If you are a woman of childbearing age, you must use reliable birth control while taking this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are using glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for hepatitis C treatment.

  • Tell your doctor if you have persistent muscle weakness.
  • Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice (more than 1-2 small glasses daily) and excessive alcohol.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking fusidic acid (an antibiotic), as combining it with Liporion can cause severe muscle problems. You might need to temporarily stop Liporion.
  • Inform your doctor if you have serious breathing problems, kidney problems, an underactive thyroid, repeated muscle pain, a history of stroke with bleeding, or myasthenia.
