How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children aged 10 and older is 10 mg once a day.

Method

You can chew the tablets or swallow them whole with water. You can take them at any time of day, with or without food, but try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleeds.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, carefully monitor your sugar levels), increased creatine kinase levels in the blood.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, difficulty breathing, sudden wheezing, chest tightness, or fainting.
  • Serious skin conditions with severe peeling and swelling of the skin, blisters on skin, mouth, eyes, genitals, fever, or rash with pink-red patches, especially on palms or soles. Purplish skin lesions (vasculitis) or skin rash/mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction).
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, rupture, or reddish-brown urine, which may indicate abnormal muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and potentially lead to kidney damage.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising that might indicate liver problems, or bile duct blockage (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes).
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, carefully monitor your sugar levels), nightmares, insomnia, dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, reduced sense of pain or touch, altered taste, memory loss, blurred vision, ringing in the ears and/or head, or hearing loss.
  • Vomiting, burping, upper and lower abdominal pain, or pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas causing stomach pain).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Rash, itchy rash, hives, or hair loss.
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue, fatigue, feeling unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in ankles), fever, positive white blood cells in urine test, gynecomastia (enlargement of breast tissue in men), tendon injury, or lupus-like syndrome (including rash, joint problems, and effects on blood cells).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have or have had a liver disease.
  • Do not take if you have unexplained abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Do not take if you are a woman of childbearing age and are not using reliable birth control.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
