Lipitor is a statin medicine used to lower blood cholesterol and fat levels, both when diet changes aren't enough and when there's an increased risk of heart disease.

How to Use

Dosage

The recommended starting dose for adults and children aged 10 years and older is 10 mg once daily.

Method

You can chew or swallow the tablets whole with water. Take them at any time of day, with or without food, but try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleed
  • Allergic reactions
  • Increased blood sugar levels, increased creatine kinase in blood
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar levels
  • Nightmares, sleeplessness
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers/toes, reduced sensation, altered taste, memory loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Vomiting, burping, upper and lower stomach pain, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas causing stomach pain)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue
  • Tiredness, feeling unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in ankles), fever
  • White blood cells in urine
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, tongue, and throat, causing breathing difficulties.
  • Severe skin conditions with peeling skin, swelling, blisters on skin, mouth, eyes, genitals, and fever. Rash with pink-red patches, especially on palms or soles.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain or rupture, or reddish-brown urine. These symptoms, especially if you also feel unwell or have a high fever, may be due to abnormal muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), which can be life-threatening and lead to kidney damage.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising (may indicate liver problems).
  • Lupus-like syndrome (including rash, joint disorders, and effects on blood cells).
  • Vision disturbances
  • Bile duct blockage (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes)
  • Tendon injury
  • Rash on skin or mouth ulcers (lichenoid drug reaction)
  • Purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation or vasculitis)
  • Hearing loss
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of male breasts)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Lipitor if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Lipitor if you have or have had liver disease or if your liver blood tests are abnormally high and unexplained.
  • Do not take Lipitor if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Women of childbearing age must use reliable contraception.
  • Do not take Lipitor if you are taking glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for Hepatitis C treatment.
  • If you are taking fusidic acid (an antibiotic) or have taken it within the last 7 days, inform your doctor as this combination can lead to severe muscle problems.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have unexplained muscle aches, pains, or weakness that lasts.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have Myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.
