How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children over 10 years old is 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose if needed.

Method

You can chew the tablet or swallow it whole with water. Take the tablet at the same time each day, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nasal inflammation, sore throat, nosebleed
  • Allergic reactions
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing
  • Serious skin conditions with severe peeling, blisters, and fever
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, or breakdown, with dark urine, especially if you also have a fever and feel unwell (rabdomyolysis), which can lead to kidney damage
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising, which could be a sign of liver problems
  • Vision problems or ringing in the ears
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Hair loss or skin rash
  • Persistent muscle weakness

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Lipitor if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Lipitor if you have or have had liver disease, or if your liver blood tests are unusually high without a clear reason.
  • Do not take Lipitor if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, breastfeeding, or are a woman who can get pregnant and are not using reliable birth control.
  • Tell your doctor if you have unexplained muscle aches, pain, or weakness, or if someone in your family has had muscle problems.
  • If you are taking fusidic acid (an antibiotic), you must temporarily stop Lipitor. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to restart.

  • Limit grapefruit juice intake; do not drink more than 1-2 small glasses per day, as large amounts can affect how Lipitor works.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase the risk of side effects.
