How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children 10 years or older is 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may slowly increase your dose if needed, usually every 4 weeks or more.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them at any time, with or without food, but try to take them at the same time every day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nasal inflammation, sore throat, nosebleed
  • Allergic reactions
  • High blood sugar (monitor if diabetic), high creatine kinase in blood
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, upset stomach, diarrhea
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain
  • Abnormal liver blood tests
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling of face, tongue, throat, breathing issues)
  • Severe skin condition (peeling, swelling, blisters on skin/mouth/eyes/genitals, fever, pink-red rashes)
  • Muscle weakness, pain, muscle breakdown, or reddish-brown urine, especially with fever or feeling unwell (rhabdomyolysis, kidney damage risk)
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising (could be liver problems, seek doctor's advice)
  • Lupus-like syndrome (rash, joint pain, blood changes)
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, low blood sugar (monitor if diabetic)
  • Nightmares, trouble sleeping
  • Dizziness, numbness/tingling, reduced sensation, taste changes, memory loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in ears and/or head
  • Vomiting, burping, stomach pain, pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Skin rash, itching, hives, hair loss
  • Neck pain, tired muscles
  • Fatigue, feeling unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially ankles), fever
  • White blood cells in urine (positive test)
  • Vision disturbances
  • Yellowing of skin/eyes (gallbladder issue)
  • Tendon injury
  • Skin rash or mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction)
  • Purplish skin lesions (vasculitis)
  • Hearing loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness)
  • Ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness)
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Breathing issues (cough, shortness of breath, fever)
  • Diabetes (more likely with high blood sugar/fats, overweight, high blood pressure)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have or have had liver problems, or if blood tests show abnormal liver function.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are a woman of childbearing age not using reliable contraception.
  • Do not take if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take if you are using a combination of glecaprevir and pibrentasvir for hepatitis C treatment.

  • Tell your doctor if you have severe lung disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have taken fusidic acid (an antibiotic) in the last 7 days, as this combination can lead to severe muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a stroke with bleeding in the brain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
  • Tell your doctor if you have had unexplained muscle pain or weakness, or a family history of muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had muscle problems with other cholesterol medicines (statins or fibrates) in the past.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice (more than 1-2 small glasses) daily, as it can affect how Lipistad works.
  • Avoid heavy alcohol consumption while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.
