Lipcut is used to lower total cholesterol, "bad" cholesterol (LDL), and triglyceride levels in the blood, while also increasing "good" cholesterol (HDL).

How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg or 20 mg, sometimes also 40 mg, per day.

Method

Take one tablet by mouth once daily, in the evening, with or without food.

Important

Do not exceed a daily dose of 80 mg.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or cramps (can be severe, leading to muscle breakdown, kidney damage, and very rarely, death).
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity) like swelling of the face, tongue, and throat causing breathing difficulties (angioedema); severe muscle pain, typically in shoulders and hips; joint pain or inflammation; blood vessel inflammation; unusual bruising, skin changes, hives, sensitivity to sunlight, fever, skin redness; shortness of breath and feeling unwell; lupus-like symptoms (including rash, joint pain, and blood cell changes).
  • Liver inflammation with yellowing of skin/eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness, weakness, loss of appetite; very rarely, liver failure.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), often with severe stomach pain.
  • Severe allergic reaction with breathing difficulties or dizziness (anaphylaxis); gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men); skin rash or sores in the mouth (lichenoid drug eruption); muscle rupture.
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia); numbness or weakness in arms and legs; headache, tingling, dizziness; blurred vision and impaired vision; digestive problems (abdominal pain, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting); rash, itching, hair loss; weakness; increased blood levels of liver function tests and a muscle enzyme (creatine kinase); memory loss, confusion.
  • Insomnia; memory impairment.
  • Erectile dysfunction; depression; lung inflammation causing breathing problems, persistent cough, and/or fever; tendon problems, sometimes with rupture; persistent muscle weakness. Other possible side effects: sleep disturbances including nightmares; sexual dysfunction; diabetes (more likely with high blood sugar/fat, overweight, high blood pressure).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take if you are taking certain other medicines (e.g., for fungal infections, HIV, some antibiotics, or other cholesterol-lowering drugs).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.

  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.
  • Inform your doctor if you consume a lot of alcohol.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
