How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is usually 10 mg, 20 mg, or sometimes 40 mg once daily. For children (10-17 years), it's typically 10 mg in the evening.

Method

Take one tablet by mouth once a day, in the evening. You can take it with or without food.

Important

For adults, no more than 80 mg per day. For children (10-17 years), no more than 40 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, and cramps, which can lead to muscle tissue breakdown and kidney damage. Very rarely, this can be fatal.
  • Allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, tongue, and throat (causing breathing difficulties), severe muscle pain, rash, joint pain or inflammation, blood vessel inflammation, unusual bruising, hives, skin sensitivity to light, fever, shortness of breath, fatigue, or lupus-like symptoms.
  • Liver inflammation with symptoms like yellowing of skin and eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite; very rarely liver failure.
  • Pancreatitis, often with severe stomach pain.
  • Severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties or dizziness.
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of male breasts).
  • Rash or sores in the mouth (lichenoid drug eruption).
  • Muscle rupture.
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Numbness or weakness in hands and feet. Headache, tingling sensation, dizziness.
  • Blurred vision and impaired vision.
  • Digestive symptoms (stomach pain, constipation, flatulence, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting).
  • Rash, itching, hair loss.
  • Weakness.
  • Increased blood test values for liver function and a specific muscle enzyme (creatine kinase).
  • Memory loss, confusion. Insomnia. Memory impairment.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Lung inflammation causing breathing difficulties, persistent cough and/or shortness of breath, or fever.
  • Tendon problems, sometimes including tendon rupture.
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, in some cases also in breathing muscles).
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing weakness of the eye muscles).
  • Sleep disturbances, including nightmares.
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Diabetes. More likely to occur if you have high blood sugar and fat levels, are overweight, and have high blood pressure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredient.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have liver disease or if you drink a lot of alcohol.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are taking certain antifungal medicines, antibiotics, HIV medicines, or similar drugs.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. Severe muscle problems are rare but possible.

  • If you are taking fusidic acid (an antibiotic for bacterial infections), you must temporarily stop using Lipcut.
  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking Lipcut.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney or thyroid disease, are over 65, are female, or have a family history of muscle disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have myasthenia or ocular myasthenia, as statins can sometimes worsen the condition.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
