How to Use

Dosage

One tablet daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush it. You can take it with or without food.

Important

Maximum one tablet daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach ache
  • Gas (flatulence)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Increased homocysteine levels in the blood (a high level of this amino acid may be linked to heart disease and stroke)
RARE
  • Severe muscle problems, including cramps, pain, tenderness, or weakness, which may lead to kidney damage or even death
  • Abdominal pain (may be a sign of pancreatitis, an inflamed pancreas)
  • Chest pain and shortness of breath (may be signs of a blood clot in the lung)
  • Pain, redness, or swelling in the leg (may be signs of a deep vein blood clot)
  • Headache
  • Gallstones
  • Decreased sexual desire
  • Rash, itching, or hives
  • Increased creatinine levels (a blood test value indicating kidney function)
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, which can cause breathing difficulties
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice) or increased liver enzyme values (may be signs of liver inflammation)
  • Hair loss
  • Increased urea levels (a blood test value indicating kidney function)
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight, sunlamps, and solariums
  • Low levels of hemoglobin (the substance carrying oxygen in blood) and white blood cells (seen in blood tests)
  • Severe skin reaction causing redness, peeling, and swelling of the skin, resembling a severe burn
  • Chronic lung problems
  • Problems caused by gallstones (complications from stones)
  • Fatigue

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to fenofibrate, peanuts, soy, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver, kidney, or gallbladder problems.
  • Do not use if you have pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) not caused by high blood fat levels.
  • Do not use if you have had an allergic reaction or skin damage from sunlight or UV light with other medicines in the past.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle cramps, pain, tenderness, or weakness, as these could be signs of serious muscle problems.

  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, ask your doctor for advice, as this medicine should only be used if absolutely necessary. Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 years of age.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) or other signs of liver inflammation, or an underactive thyroid.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners (like warfarin), as this medicine can affect their action.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other cholesterol-lowering medicines (statins or fibrates), as they may increase the risk of muscle problems.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider potential interactions especially with statins and warfarin. (updated 17.4.2023)
