How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose, which depends on your condition and your current doses of linagliptin and/or metformin.

Method

Take one tablet by mouth twice a day, as prescribed by your doctor, with meals to reduce stomach problems.

Important

Do not exceed a maximum daily dose of 5 mg linagliptin and 2000 mg metformin hydrochloride.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Shaking, sweating, anxiety, blurred vision, tingling lips, pale skin, mood changes, or confusion (signs of low blood sugar, especially when used with certain other diabetes medicines).
  • Diarrhea.
  • Increased levels of an enzyme called lipase in your blood.
  • Nausea.
  • Stomach pain (from metformin alone).
  • Metallic taste in mouth (from metformin alone).
  • Low vitamin B12 levels, with symptoms like extreme tiredness, sore and red tongue, tingling, or pale/yellow skin (from metformin alone).
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis (symptoms like vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, severe tiredness, trouble breathing, low body temperature, slow heartbeat).
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), with symptoms like severe, persistent stomach pain.
  • Allergic reactions including wheezing, shortness of breath, skin rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat which can cause trouble breathing or swallowing.
  • Inflammation of the nose and throat.
  • Cough.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Vomiting.
  • Increased levels of an enzyme called amylase in your blood.
  • Itching.
  • Skin blisters (bullous pemphigoid).
  • Liver problems (when used with insulin).
  • Constipation (when used with insulin).
  • Hepatitis (liver disease, from metformin alone).
  • Skin reactions like redness (erythema, from metformin alone).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to linagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have uncontrolled diabetes, high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have ever had diabetic pre-coma.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have a severe infection, such as an infection affecting your lungs, airways, or kidneys.

  • Do not take this medicine if you are severely dehydrated (lost a lot of body fluid), for example, due to prolonged or severe diarrhea or repeated vomiting.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have acute heart failure, recently had a heart attack, have severe circulatory problems (like shock), or have breathing difficulties.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have liver disease.
  • Do not take this medicine if you drink too much alcohol, either daily or occasionally.
  • This medicine is not for treating type 1 diabetes, where your body does not produce any insulin.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have severe, long-lasting stomach pain, which could be a sign of pancreatitis.
  • Talk to your doctor if you develop skin blisters, as this could be a sign of a rare skin condition called bullous pemphigoid.
  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you have symptoms of lactic acidosis: vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, general feeling of being unwell, severe tiredness, trouble breathing, low body temperature, and slow heartbeat. Lactic acidosis is a very serious side effect.
  • Tell your doctor if you are having major surgery or an injection with iodine contrast for an X-ray or scan, as you may need to stop this medicine temporarily.
