Dosage

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a vein, under the skin, or near your spinal cord (epidural).

Important

Your doctor will give you the lowest dose that works, and medical staff will carefully monitor you to prevent too much medicine.

  • Increased sensitivity to sound
  • Vision problems (e.g., blurred vision, double vision)
  • Tremors
  • Feeling drunk or confused
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., hives, rash, severe allergic shock)
  • Irregular or stopped heartbeat
  • Slowed or stopped breathing
  • Changes in sensation or muscle weakness (neuropathy)
  • Inflammation around the spinal cord (e.g., lower back pain, numbness or weakness in legs)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to lidocaine, similar local anesthetics, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use for epidural anesthesia if you have very low blood pressure or severe heart conditions where your heart cannot pump enough blood due to heart problems or major blood loss.
  • If you are elderly or in poor health, your doctor may need to reduce your dose.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, such as a slow or irregular heartbeat.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, as your dose may need to be adjusted.

  • Be aware that spinal anesthesia (epidural) can cause serious side effects by affecting central nerves.
  • When used in the eye, this medicine can rarely cause temporary or permanent side effects.
  • If infused directly into a joint, this medicine can cause rapid cartilage damage.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a condition called acute porphyria.
