Method

This medicine is given by injection by a trained healthcare professional. It can be injected locally around the area to be numbed, near nerves, into the epidural space near the spinal cord, or into a vein in a limb with restricted blood flow.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of your hands, feet, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat.
  • Severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties.
  • Severe allergic reaction causing an itchy rash.
  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • Pain or numbness in the back or lower legs after spinal injection.
  • Difficulty walking after spinal injection.
  • Difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels after spinal injection.
  • Weakness or dizziness after spinal injection.
  • Slow heart rate or pulse after spinal injection.
COMMON
  • Dizziness, a strange or unreal feeling, drowsiness, tremor, or numbness of the tongue. These might mean you have received too much medicine.
  • Blurred vision or seeing double.
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Increased sensitivity to everyday sounds.
  • High or low blood pressure.
  • Slowed heart rate or the heart stopping.
  • Changes in heart rhythm.
  • Breathing difficulties or breathing stopping.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Rash, itching and swelling of the face.
  • Pain, inflammation, or numbness at the injection site after the medicine wears off.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to lidocaine, other ingredients in this medicine, or similar local anesthetics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, very low blood volume, or slow heart rate.
  • If this medicine contains adrenaline, it should not be injected into veins or certain body parts like fingers or toes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have seizures (epilepsy), low potassium, liver or kidney problems, breathing difficulties, or muscle weakness.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
