How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. Typically, it is 1/2 to 1 tablet (250 mg to 500 mg) once or twice a day, depending on your infection.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth, swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or between meals. The tablet can be divided into two equal doses.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 1000 mg, which means two 500 mg tablets.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Increased levels of certain liver enzymes in the blood
RARE
  • Severe diarrhea with blood, stomach cramps, and high fever
  • Tendon or ligament pain and inflammation, which can lead to rupture
  • Allergic reactions like rash, difficulty swallowing, or facial swelling
  • Seizures
  • Mental health problems, such as hallucinations, depression, anxiety
  • Widespread rash with fever and other symptoms (DRESS syndrome)
  • Low blood sugar or coma, especially in diabetics
  • Nerve damage symptoms like burning, tingling, pain, or numbness in hands and feet
  • Increased bruising or bleeding (due to low platelets)
  • Fast heartbeat or low blood pressure
  • Muscle weakness
  • Changes in kidney function
  • Fever
  • Memory problems
  • Distinct red patches on the skin

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to levofloxacin or similar antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had epilepsy, tendon problems, are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are under 18 years old.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are over 60, use steroids, have had an organ transplant, or have heart, kidney, liver, or mental health problems.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden, severe pain in your stomach, chest, or back.
  • Contact your doctor if you have breathing difficulties, swollen ankles, or new heart palpitations.

  • Stop taking the medicine and contact a doctor if you develop tendon pain, numbness, tingling, or a severe rash.
  • Avoid strong sunlight and tanning beds during treatment and for 2 days afterwards.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
