How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine your exact dose, usually between 1000-3000 mg daily for adults and adolescents weighing 50 kg or more. For children (4-11 years) and adolescents (12-17 years) weighing less than 50 kg, the dose is 20-60 mg per kg of body weight daily.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion into a vein by a doctor or nurse. It is usually given twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, around the same time each day. The infusion takes about 15 minutes.

Important

For adults and adolescents weighing 50 kg or more, the maximum daily dose is 3000 mg. For children and adolescents weighing less than 50 kg, the maximum is 60 mg per kg of body weight daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Cold-like symptoms (inflammation of nose and throat)
  • Drowsiness, headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression, hostility or aggression, anxiety, sleeplessness, nervousness or irritability
  • Seizures, balance problems, dizziness (feeling unstable), lack of energy (lethargy), tremors (uncontrolled shaking)
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Cough
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, indigestion, vomiting, nausea
  • Rash
  • Weakness/tiredness
RARE
  • Low platelet count, low white blood cell count
  • Weight loss, weight gain
  • Suicide attempt, suicidal thoughts, mental disorders, abnormal behavior, hallucination, anger, confusion, panic attack, mood swings, agitation
  • Memory loss, impaired memory (forgetfulness), clumsiness, tingling sensation on skin, difficulty concentrating
  • Double vision, blurred vision
  • Increased/abnormal liver function test results
  • Hair loss, eczema, itching
  • Muscle weakness, muscle pain
  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Decrease in all types of blood cells
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS, anaphylactic reaction, swelling of face, lips, tongue, and throat)
  • Low blood sodium levels
  • Delirium (severe confusion)
  • Brain disorder (encephalopathy)
  • Seizures may get worse or happen more often
  • Uncontrolled muscle jerks in head, body, and limbs, involuntary movements, hyperactivity
  • Changes in heart rhythm (on ECG)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas
  • Liver failure, liver inflammation
  • Sudden worsening of kidney function
  • Skin rash that can form blisters and look like small targets (erythema multiforme), widespread blistering rash and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), and a more severe form causing skin peeling over more than 30% of the body surface (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) with increased creatine kinase levels in blood, more common in Japanese patients.
  • Limping or difficulty walking
  • Combination of fever, muscle stiffness, unstable blood pressure and heart rate, confusion, reduced consciousness (may be signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome), more common in Japanese patients.
  • Repetitive unwanted thoughts or feelings, or a need to repeat actions (obsessive-compulsive disorder)

Important Warnings

  • If you are allergic to levetiracetam, pyrrolidone derivatives, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor might need to change your dose.
  • If your child's growth slows down or puberty starts unexpectedly, tell your doctor.
  • Some people taking this medicine have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicide. If you feel depressed or have such thoughts, talk to your doctor right away.
  • If you or your family have a history of irregular heartbeat, or if you have a condition or treatment that puts you at risk for irregular heartbeat or problems with your body's salt balance.

  • Tell your doctor if you experience strange thoughts, irritability, unusual aggression, or if your family/friends notice big changes in your mood or behavior.
  • Your seizures might get worse or happen more often, especially during the first month of treatment or after a dose increase.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider possibility of mental disorders. (updated 6.10.2025)
