How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 1000 mg to 3000 mg daily for adults and adolescents weighing 50 kg or more.

Method

Take tablets twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, at about the same time each day. Swallow them whole with water, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 3000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of the nose and throat
  • Drowsiness or sleepiness
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression, hostility or aggression, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness or irritability
  • Convulsions (seizures), balance disorder, dizziness (feeling unstable), lethargy (lack of energy), tremor (uncontrolled shaking)
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Cough
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, vomiting, nausea
  • Rash
  • Weakness or fatigue
RARE
  • Decreased number of platelets or white blood cells
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Attempted suicide, suicidal thoughts, mental disorders, abnormal behavior, hallucinations, anger, confusion, panic attack, emotional instability, agitation
  • Memory loss, impaired memory, abnormal coordination, tingling sensations, difficulty concentrating
  • Double vision, blurred vision
  • Elevated or abnormal liver function test values
  • Hair loss, eczema, itching
  • Muscle weakness, muscle pain
  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Decreased number of all types of blood cells
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., DRESS, anaphylactic reaction, swelling of face, lips, tongue, and throat)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood
  • Suicide, personality disorders (behavioral problems), abnormal thinking (slow thinking, inability to concentrate)
  • Delirium
  • Brain disease (encephalopathy)
  • Seizures may worsen or occur more often
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms affecting head, trunk, arms, and legs, difficulty controlling movements, hyperactivity
  • Changes in heart rhythm (electrocardiogram)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Liver failure, hepatitis
  • Sudden worsening of kidney function
  • Skin rash with blisters forming small targets (erythema multiforme), widespread blistering and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), severe skin peeling over more than 30% of body surface (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown) linked to high creatine phosphokinase in blood
  • Limping or difficulty walking

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to levetiracetam or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • If you have kidney problems, follow your doctor's instructions as your dose may need to be changed.
  • If you have symptoms of depression or thoughts of harming yourself, contact your doctor.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe allergic reaction, such as weakness, dizziness, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or flu-like symptoms with a rash.
  • If your seizures get worse or happen more often after starting treatment or increasing the dose, contact your doctor.
