How to Use

Dosage

Typical dosage is between 1000 mg and 3000 mg per day.

Method

Take Levetiracetam Sandoz tablets with liquid, such as water. You can take them with or without food. You can split the tablet.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 3000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of the nose and throat
  • Drowsiness, headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression, hostility or aggression, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness or irritability
  • Seizures, balance problems, dizziness (feeling unsteady), lethargy (lack of energy), involuntary trembling (tremor)
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Cough
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, vomiting, nausea
  • Rash
  • Weakness, tiredness
RARE
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., low platelets, low white blood cells, low all blood cells)
  • Weight changes (loss or gain)
  • Serious mental changes like suicidal thoughts or attempts, severe depression, aggression, confusion, hallucinations, panic attacks, mood swings, abnormal behavior, personality changes, delirium
  • Memory problems (amnesia, impaired memory), coordination problems, tingling skin, difficulty concentrating
  • Vision problems (double vision, blurred vision)
  • Abnormal liver test results, liver problems (hepatitis, liver failure), pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
  • Hair loss, skin rash, itching, eczema
  • Muscle weakness, muscle pain, muscle tissue breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), limping or trouble walking
  • Injury
  • Infections
  • Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Low sodium levels in the blood
  • Brain disease (encephalopathy)
  • Worsening or more frequent seizures, uncontrolled muscle twitches
  • Changes in heart rhythm
  • Severe skin rashes with blisters and peeling skin (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal nekrolysis)
  • A combination of fever, stiff muscles, unstable blood pressure and heart rate, confusion, and decreased consciousness (may be signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (unwanted repetitive thoughts or actions)

Important Warnings

  • If you have kidney problems, follow your doctor's instructions, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • If you notice slow growth or unexpected puberty development in a child, contact your doctor.
  • If you have symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor immediately. A small number of people taking epilepsy medicines have had such thoughts.
  • If you or your family have a history of irregular heart rhythm, or if you have a condition/treatment that makes you prone to heart rhythm problems or electrolyte imbalance, tell your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience severe or prolonged unusual thoughts, irritability, or aggression, or if your mood or behavior changes significantly.

  • In rare cases, seizures may worsen or occur more frequently, especially during the first month of treatment or after a dose increase.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor's advice, as it may increase the number of seizures.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider possibility of mental disorders. (updated 6.10.2025)
