How to Use
Dosage
The typical dose for adults and adolescents (12-17 years, weighing 50 kg or more) is 1000 mg to 3000 mg per day.
Method
Take the tablets twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, around the same time each day. Swallow them with a glass of water, with or without food.
Important
The maximum daily dose is usually 3000 mg.
Possible Side Effects
COMMON
- •Stuffy nose or sore throat
- •Feeling sleepy or drowsy
- •Headache
- •Loss of appetite
- •Feeling depressed, angry, or aggressive
- •Feeling anxious, unable to sleep, nervous, or easily annoyed
- •Seizures or fits
- •Problems with balance or feeling dizzy (like spinning)
- •Feeling very tired and lacking energy
- •Shaking that you can't control
- •Cough
- •Stomach pain, diarrhea, indigestion
- •Feeling sick or throwing up
- •Skin rash
- •Feeling weak or tired
RARE
- •Fewer platelets or white blood cells in your blood
- •Weight loss or gain
- •Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, mental problems
- •Strange behavior, seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), feeling angry, confused, panic attacks, mood swings, feeling upset
- •Memory loss, problems with memory, clumsiness, tingling skin, difficulty paying attention
- •Double vision or blurry vision
- •Abnormal liver test results
- •Hair loss, eczema, itching
- •Muscle weakness or muscle pain
- •Injury
- •Infection
- •Decrease in all types of blood cells
- •Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- •Low sodium levels in the blood
- •Personality problems, slow thinking, difficulty concentrating
- •Delirium (severe confusion and disorientation)
- •Brain disorder (encephalopathy) with symptoms like confusion, drowsiness, memory problems, unusual behavior, and uncontrolled movements. See 'Talk to your doctor immediately' for more details.
- •Seizures getting worse or happening more often
- •Uncontrolled muscle jerks in the head, body, arms, and legs, hyperactivity
- •Changes in heart rhythm
- •Pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
- •Liver failure or inflammation (hepatitis)
- •Sudden kidney failure
- •Skin rash with blisters, red spots (erythema multiforme), widespread blistering and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or severe skin peeling over large areas of the body (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
- •Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) with high levels of a substance called creatinine phosphokinase in the blood
- •Limping or difficulty walking
- •Combination of fever, stiff muscles, unstable blood pressure and heart rate, confusion, low awareness (signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
- •Repeated unwanted thoughts or urges to do things (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
Important Warnings
- Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can increase your seizures.
- If you have kidney problems, tell your doctor, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
- Contact your doctor if you or your child experience changes in growth or puberty.
- If you experience thoughts of self-harm or suicide, or if you feel depressed, contact your doctor immediately.
- Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of irregular heartbeats or other heart conditions.

- Watch out for significant changes in mood or behavior, such as unusual aggression or irritability, and tell your doctor if these occur.
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
- This medicine can make you drowsy, especially at the start of treatment or when the dose is increased. Do not drive or operate machines until you know how it affects you.
- Do not take macrogol (a laxative) one hour before or after your Levetiracetam Orion dose, as it can make the medicine less effective.
