How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults and adolescents (12-17 years) weighing 50 kg or more is 1000-3000 mg daily. Your doctor will start you on a lower dose for two weeks, then gradually increase it.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with enough liquid, such as a glass of water. You can take them with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and adolescents (weighing 50 kg or more) is 3000 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nose and throat infection
  • Drowsiness (feeling sleepy)
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression, anger or aggression, anxiety, trouble sleeping, nervousness or irritability
  • Seizures
  • Balance problems, dizziness (feeling unsteady), lack of energy or enthusiasm, shaking that you cannot control
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Cough
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, indigestion, vomiting, nausea
  • Rash
  • Weakness/tiredness
RARE
  • Decrease in blood platelets, decrease in white blood cells
  • Weight loss, weight gain
  • Suicide attempt, suicidal thoughts, mental disorders, abnormal behavior, hallucinations, anger, confusion, panic attack, mood swings, agitation
  • Memory loss, impaired memory, clumsiness, tingling sensation on the skin, trouble concentrating
  • Double vision, blurred vision
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Hair loss, eczema, itching
  • Muscle weakness, muscle pain
  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Decrease in all types of blood cells
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS, anaphylactic reaction, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood
  • Suicide, personality disorders (behavioral problems), abnormal thinking (slow thinking, difficulty concentrating)
  • Delirium (severe confusion)
  • Encephalopathy (brain disease)
  • Seizures may get worse or happen more often
  • Uncontrolled muscle twitching in the head, torso, arms, and legs; involuntary movements; hyperactivity
  • Changes in heart rhythm (seen on an ECG)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Liver failure, liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Sudden worsening of kidney function
  • Rash with blisters that look like small targets (erythema multiforme); widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome); or a more severe rash where more than 30% of your skin peels off (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and increased creatine phosphokinase levels in the blood.
  • Limping or difficulty walking
  • A combination of fever, stiff muscles, unstable blood pressure and heart rate, confusion, and low consciousness (signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome).
  • Repeated unwanted thoughts or feelings, or a need to repeat actions over and over (obsessive-compulsive disorder).

Important Warnings

  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor may need to change your dose.
  • A small number of people taking this medicine have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicide. If you feel depressed or have these thoughts, contact your doctor right away.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor, as this may increase your seizures.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden weakness, dizziness, or trouble breathing (signs of a severe allergic reaction).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience flu-like symptoms, a rash on your face spreading to other parts of your body, and a high fever (could be DRESS syndrome).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience low urine output, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and swelling in your legs, ankles, or feet (signs of kidney problems).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience a rash with blisters that look like small targets (dark spots in the middle, surrounded by a lighter area and a dark ring) (erythema multiforme).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience a severe widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin, especially around your mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience a more severe rash where more than 30% of your skin peels off (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience serious changes in your mental state, like confusion, sleepiness, memory loss, unusual behavior, or uncontrolled movements (signs of a brain disorder).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Consider possibility of mental disorders. (updated 6.10.2025)
